The successful candidate will work closely with the EEWRC team in order to develop a novel approach which propose water hydro‐diplomacy modeling scenarios for an integrated water mass concept (conventional and nonconventional), in relation with the United Nations Convention 1997‐article 6 parameters: (a) geographic, hydrographic, hydrological, climatic, ecological and other factors of a natural character; (b) the social and economic needs of the watercourse States concerned; (c) the population dependent on the watercourse in each watercourse State; (d) the effects of the use or uses of the watercourses in one watercourse State on other watercourse States; (e) existing and potential uses of the watercourse; (f) conservation, protection, development and economy of use of the water resources of the watercourse and the costs of measures taken to that effect; (g) the availability of alternatives, of comparable value, to a particular planned or existing use.

These modeling scenarios will highlight the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 2, 6 and 7), and the Water‐Energy‐Food‐Ecosystem Nexus for mitigating the water‐related conflicts in the EMME countries. Such approach aims to propose a technical solution (toolkit) reaching a win‐win agreement between the Blue Nile riparian countries (Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt) and the Jordan River Basin riparian countries (Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Palestine, and Israel) based on “equitable sharing and reasonable use concept. Realizing the research objectives will contribute to: (i) securing the domestic water needs for all riparian countries, (ii) promoting the irrigated agriculture amongst all riparian countries, (iii) satisfying the energy demands for all riparian countries, and (iv) securing the food needs for all riparian countries.

The initial period of the appointment will be for a duration of 30 months with the possibility of renewal, depending on performance and availability of funds. 5. Communicating the results and implications of research conducted at EEWRC at all levels including the water‐related decision makers.

Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s culture.

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join the Institute as Researcher in Atmospheric Sciences at the Institute’s Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C). This will be in the framework of the EU-H2020 “EMME-CARE” (Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre; http://emme-care.cyi.ac.cy/; TEAMING Grant no. 856612), and in cooperation with EU Advanced Partners (Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Germany; University of Helsinki in Finland; and CEA in France).

                              Description of the Position

Greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions from the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East (EMME) region have been rising quickly in the last decade and mitigation efforts will be required to keep the goal of the Paris Agreement. In support of national inventories, atmospheric in-situ and satellite observations of greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4) and co-emitted pollutants (NO2, CO) can be used to quantify emissions and their variability in response to human activities and climate change.

We seek for a junior or experienced researcher in the field of atmospheric modeling to quantify greenhouse gas emissions from the EMME countries using observed atmospheric concentrations of CO2 from OCO2 and OCO3 spaceborne sensors and of CH4 from S5P TROPOMI and GOSAT. Atmospheric inversion systems developed at LSCE (Laboratoire des Sciences du Climate et de l’Environnement, France) will be adapted to the EMME region

The successful candidate is expected to develop a research activity on modeling atmospheric GHGs within the CARE-C (Climate and Atmosphere Research Center) at The Cyprus Institute, in Cyprus. The position is opened for an early researcher with experience in numerical modeling or an experienced researcher.

Supervision and/or co-supervision of graduate students, the development of research projects is encouraged and will be facilitated and supported by scientific and administrative staff at CARE-C.

The successful candidate will be expected to support new research thrust with the highest international standards, leveraging CyI and CARE-C resources (45 million euros in the framework of EMME-CARE) and utilizing the highly competitive research facilities of the Cyprus Institute such as the “Cy-Tera” HPC (http://web.cytera.cyi.ac.cy/) and the Cyprus Atmospheric Observatory (CAO, http://www.cyi.ac.cy/index.php/cao.html) which is part of international networks (WMO-GAW, EMEP, ACTRIS, TCCON).
