The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated scientist, at the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor in Quantum Computing to join the Institute’s CaSToRC Centre on a full-time basis (100% FTE) at its premises at Athalassas’ campus.

 

The successful candidate will work under the ERA Chair funded project QUEST: Quantum Computing for Excellence in Science and Technology, which aims to create a research group in Quantum Computing, with the ERA chair holder Prof. Karl Jansen and other members of his team and CaSToRC. As a team leader, the candidate is expected to play a key role in the successful completion of the QUEST project by developing and leading research projects in Quantum Computing, building and managing their own research group in this field, and strengthening collaborations with the corresponding group at the Center for Quantum Technology and Applications (CQTA) at DESY-Zeuthen in Germany, as well as with other local and international institutions.

 

As a faculty member of the Cyprus Institute, the selected applicant is intended to enhance the competencies of the Institute in the area of Quantum Computing. They will implement and advance the research agenda of the Institute and CaSToRC in close collaboration with faculty, research staff and the leadership of CyI. An aptitude and/or experience in mentoring and teaching graduate students is necessary as the successful candidate will be expected to actively contribute to the Institute’s graduate program.

 

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

Particularly for the project:

1.       Developing Quantum computing algorithms and methods including optimization and quantum machine learning algorithms, in particular QAOA;

2.       Benchmarking of quantum computing hardware;

3.       Developing models and applications in e.g. physics, chemistry, cryptography and engineering for quantum computing simulations and hardware;

4.       Supervising Ph.D. students and Postdocs;

5.       Supporting the ERA Chair and the Principal Investigator in scientific and organizational work, including acquiring third party funding.

 

Position Specific Required Qualifications:

·       Doctoral degree in Quantum Information, physics, mathematics, computer science, electrical engineering or equivalent areas.

·       Knowledge of programming languages, such as C, C++, Julia or Python;

The successful candidate will be a member of the Technical Services and Support (TSS) Unit of the Institute, which supports the smooth, uniform, optimised and sustainable development and use of the CyI research facilities and laboratories and their successful engagement with external organisations.

 

Beyond its institutional role, the TSS Unit participates in externally funded grants that provide financial support for its objectives. The most prominent of them is the Cyprus European Digital Innovation Hub “DiGiNN”. DiGiNN is a consortium of several organisations in Cyprus, coordinated by the CyI, that functions as one-stop shop to support the digital transformation of Small and Medium Sized Entreprises and the public sector through the provision of access to technical expertise and experimentation in digital technologies, as well as through financing advice, training, and skills development that are needed for a successful digital transformation.

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

·       Promotes and enables the collaboration of the Institute with companies and other organisations, and acts as the liaison between clients and the CyI technical/ business development teams.

·       Supports the negotiation and the conclusion of contracts and agreements with external parties regarding the provision of services and the provision of access to CyI research facilities.

·       Supports and contributes to the monitoring of the process of establishment and the performance review of facilities and labs.

·       Promotes and contributes to the uniform and harmonised operation and optimal use of all CyI scientific instruments, labs and facilities through the development, maintenance, and monitoring of the implementation of policies, guidelines and tools concerning their operation, costing, staffing and the provision of internal and external access.

·       Supports fundraising activities for developing research facilities and labs, as well as their human resources, through competitive grants, service provision, and other sources, and contributes to managing these funds.

·       Contributes to the integration of CyI facilities and labs in European Research Infrastructure Networks, such as Research Infrastructures operating under the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) Roadmap.

·       Promotes the development of cross-centre collaborations in developing and providing research and technical services.

·       Supports and ensures compliance of costing practices for the internal and external provision of research and technical research services with CyI policies and regulations.

·       Executes project administration/coordination activities (timing, financial reporting, deliverables, communication with funding organisations) of externally funded grants.

The successful candidate is expected to carry out research on desalination and brine management activities both hardware (experiments) and software (modelling). Moreover, the Post-Doc will be engaged in the current activities of the group related to:

i)                    Multiple Effect Distillation (MED) process,

ii)                   Forward Osmosis (FO) process,  

iii)                 brine management and zero liquid discharge (ZLD).

iv)                 Extraction of valuable minerals from brine

Furthermore, the successful candidate will be involved with modeling activities, related to thermal desalination process, solar powered desalination process, and comparison between other renewable powered desalination processes and methods like PV Reverse Osmosis with solar driven desalination processes.

The successful candidate will be collaborating with project partners in carrying out common research activities, drafting deliverable, organizing and hosting researchers and staff.  The candidate is expected to be reporting the findings in ways both appealing to a wider audience (e.g. presentations, conferences, memos), as well as through academic publications / contributions. Some travelling may be required.

The successful candidate will be part of a team responsible for the 3D modelling of historical buildings, archaeological sites, and cities for interactive visualization applications. The successful candidate, as member of the team, will be responsible to produce 3D scenes of archaeological sites and cities, creation of new interactive and immersive environment applications, maintaining the existing Virtual Reality software applications, to troubleshoot and resolve issues as they arise, and to identify and pursue opportunities for further research development optimising 3D mesh models for VR applications.

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

·       3D modelling for archaeological VR and architectural research purposes.

·       Texturing and image processing for real-time rendering applications.

·       Advanced rendering and visualisation methods.

The OneSTOP project will automate data flows to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and Global Register of Introduced and Invasive Species (GRIIS).

 

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

·       Compile and update GRIIS list for Cyprus

·       Assist the team assemble the GRIIS Europe Checklist for IAS

·       Horizon Scanning of IAS

·       Communicate with IAS experts from Cyprus and abroad for the needs of the project

·       Participate in dissemination and citizen science events such as living labs and BioBlitz when needed

·       Report findings to PI in Cyprus and to Work Package coordinator

Position Specific Required Qualifications:

To achieve this, the project will also develop on-line innovation resources, innovation training, and community engagement events.

The successful candidate will contribute to the implementation of ENVRINNOV through the execution of planned project activities and the preparation of deliverables and other project technical reports under the guidance of the ENVRINNOV Coordinator. They will also contribute to building ongoing engagement with the Consortium partners, the wider EVNRI community and the private sector.

The project aims to foster sustainable research careers and strengthen institutional human resource strategies for researchers (HRS4R) through knowledge sharing, peer-learning, and policy alignment. The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join the Institute as a Front Desk Administrator on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Athalassas’ Campus.

We are seeking for a motivated individual that is eager to learn and develop in the field of general administration in a research and educational institution, for carrying out a variety of administrative tasks. The position requires the daily coordination of the front desk of The Cyprus Institute and other general administrative duties. The main purpose of the job is to to act as a first point of contact for the Institute, always acting in a welcoming and professional manner and to provide a positive first impression.

 

Position Specific Responsibilities:

 

•         Has a good knowledge of the Institute’s functions, operations and structures, the campus’ infrastructures and spaces and is always well informed and aware of the Institute’s events and important visits.

•         Has a strong knowledge of the security procedures and general awareness of the CyI information systems in order the assist and direct staff and visitors.

•         Provides basic and accurate information in person and via phone or email.

•         Keeps record of the visitors and provide them with access badges accordingly.

•         Answers and coordinates incoming phone calls.

•         Monitors and handles email accounts related to the front desk.

•         Handles incoming and outgoing correspondence.

•         Keeps a logbook for courier drop offs/pick-ups.

•         Inform staff members to pick up from front desk envelopes and packages from couriers.

•         Contributes in general administrative duties and deal with general and specific enquiries.

•         Coordinates and maintains information resources and materials for use in front desk.

•         Monitors the security cameras.

 

Position-Specific Required Qualifications:

•         Excellent Greek and English language skills both verbally and in writing

•         Sociable and pleasant personality

 

Position-Specific Preferred Qualifications:

•         Relevant professional experience with proven track of relevant training participation will be considered an advantage

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated VR Engineer to join the Institute’s STARC Centre on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Athalassa’s Campus.

The successful candidate will work, under the HERIFORGE project, on different aspects of VR development, such as graphics, audio, physics, user interface, networking, or performance optimization.

The main goal of HERIFORGE is to develop a network of three interconnected place-based hubs in Poland, Cyprus and Turkey providing Research and Innovation environment for innovation in the Cultural and Creative Industries with the responsible use of XR (extended reality) technologies and cultural heritage for the benefit of social resilience.

The rank of the position will depend on the candidate’s qualifications and experience (Junior Specialised Research Technical Scientist or Specialised Research Technical Scientist as per relevant job descriptions).

 

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

·       Contributes to software documentation, including user manuals, technical specifications, and best practices guidelines.

·       Participates in software development lifecycle processes, such as requirement gathering, design, coding, version control, testing, and deployment, to ensure robust software delivery.

·       Collaborates effectively within a multidisciplinary team, including designers, developers, academics, archaeologists, and more.

·       Assists in estimating and planning projects, providing input on feasibility and timelines.

·       Design, develop and maintain VR applications.

·       Develops, integrates and debugs VR SDKs

·       Works on VR frameworks and engines, such as Unity or Unreal.

·       Conducts thorough testing and debugging of VR applications to identify and resolve any issues or bugs.

·       Collaborates with software engineers in the team and project stakeholders to integrate new immersive interaction components.

·       Stays up-to-date with the latest trends and VR technologies and apply them to enhance project results.

Position Specific Required Qualifications:

·       Bachelor’s degree (as per JDs) in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or related field

·       Experience in 3D modelling

·       Experience in data visualization

Position Specific Preferred Qualifications:

·       Proficient in at least one programming language, such as C#, C++, or Java, Object-oriented coding

·       VR frameworks and engines, such as Unity or Unreal.

This position is central to the operation, development, and technical management of advanced atmospheric instrumentation, including a Proton Transfer Reaction - Time of Flight - Mass Spectrometer (PTR-ToF-MS) and reactive trace gas analyzers (O₃, NOₓ, SO₂), both in the field and in the laboratory.

The candidate will act as the technical lead for the Reactive Trace Gases team, overseeing experimental activities, ensuring high-quality data acquisition, and supporting the integration of innovative technologies into environmental monitoring setups.

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

·       Technical lead for the operation, calibration and maintenance of a PTR-ToF-MS in both laboratory and field deployments

·       Design, development, and integration of chamber-based components for experimental setups

·       Coordination and execution of field campaigns

·       Management of reactive trace gas analysers (O₃, NOₓ, SO₂) and the team’s equipment

·       Contribution to the development and deployment of low-cost atmospheric sensors

·       Support for instrumentation activities across both the Environmental Observations and Environmental Technologies Departments

Position Specific Required Qualifications:

·       3-year relevant experience

This position is central to the RIF-funded EVOCPOLIS project (Emission of Volatile Organic Compounds in Cities & Pollution: An Integrated System), which investigates the complex interplay between biogenic and anthropogenic VOC emissions in urban environments.

The candidate will contribute to experimental research using advanced instrumentation, including a Proton Transfer Reaction - Time of Flight - Mass Spectrometer (PTR-ToF-MS) and a portable photosynthesis system, to quantify biogenic VOC emissions from urban vegetation. In this role, the candidate will explore environmental stressors influencing these emissions and help advance our understanding of their implications for atmospheric chemistry and urban greening strategies.

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

·       Conduct experimental research on biogenic VOC emissions and their role in urban atmospheric chemistry

·       Contribute to the development and implementation of chamber-based sampling techniques suitable for measurements with the PTR-ToF-MS

·       Analysis of complex datasets using advanced software tools

·       Contribute to scientific publications and research outputs for academic, public, and policy audiences

·       Engage actively in regional and international scientific networks, including conference participation

·       Supervision, mentoring, and guidance of Research Assistants and PhD students
