The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated Researcher to join the Institute’s CaSToRC Centre on a full-time or part-time basis for its premises at Athalassas Campus.  

The candidate will pursue research in the context of the nationally (RIF) funded projects ASPERIUM and BIOLEA, focusing on the development and application as well of computational methods and simulations for materials with energy and textile applications respectively.

The candidate is expected to be highly involved in the development and application as well of ab-initio and atomistic simulation methodologies and continuum mechanics for complex nanostructured materials. They will also develop algorithms and codes for simulations/data analytics methodologies in engineering applications.

 

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

1.      Develop ab-initio, atomistic simulation and/or continuum (finite element methods) methodologies for complex nanostructured materials.

2.      Developing algorithms and codes for simulations/data analytics in engineering applications.

3.      Performing large-scale computations in computational engineering.

4.      Writing proposals for accessing computational resources.

Position Specific Required Qualifications:

·        PhD degree in Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science or relevant disciplines.

·        Previous experience in ab-initio calculations and/or molecular simulations for complex molecular systems.

Position Specific Preferred Qualifications:

·        Previous experience in at least two of the following areas: ab-initio calculations, multi-scale modelling, molecular dynamics, statistical methods, data analytics, and stochastic (Monte Carlo) methods.

·        Publications in high-impact factor journals.

The Water Department investigates hydrologic and ecosystems processes and tests agro-ecosystems innovations and management practices through field observations, experimental research and modelling, in cooperation with various stakeholders in Cyprus and abroad.

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the Horizon Europe Soil Mission projects of the Water Department, with a special focus on the EUROSION Project ("European Soil Erosion Monitoring and Modelling Network for Sustainable Agricultural Land Management"). This project is a cooperation of 24 research partners from EU and associated countries, coordinated by Wageningen University. In the framework of the EUROSION project we will establish long-term wind and water erosion monitoring nodes in Cyprus.

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join the Institute’s PROTEAS Research Facility of the EEWRC on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Pentakomo Campus (Limassol).

The successful candidate will be responsible to carry out the operation, maintenance and development of the Monitoring and Control System at the PROTEAS Concentrated Solar Power Facility. Concurrently, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute in the on-going activities of Energy Division associated with the integration, controls, monitoring and development of database for the scientific fields of: i) Concentrated Solar Power, ii) Energy Storage, iii) Desalination, iv) Polygeneration and Hybridization, v) Microgrids portfolio of the Energy Division at CyI.

The successful candidate will be expected to design, develop and integrate Virtual Interfaces to the Main PROTEAS control system and it is expected that they will be in charge of the PROTEAS Database and Data Acquisition systems. The successful candidate will be expected to closely collaborate with the researchers on the implementation of controls / monitoring and automation strategies for specific research activities and projects.

 

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

·        Maintenance and development of the Monitoring and Control System at CyI PROTEAS Facility at Pentakomo. Selection of appropriate sensors, hardware and software tools are included.

·        Design, testing, construction and optimization of monitoring and control strategies in LabView environment.

·        Implementation and maintenance of database to store and treat scientific data.

·        Data acquisition, instrument control, test automation, signal processing and embedded system design.

·        Communication with existing and future assets at PROTEAS, as well as with IT equipment in liaison with the IT dept of CyI.

·        Provide software support in LabVIEW for the development, operation and maintenance of other laboratories of the Energy department.

·        Support with the design, specification, and integration of instrumentation and control systems for high-temperature solar thermal facilities.

·        Support the development and maintenance process control philosophies, P&IDs, functional specifications, and automation architecture.

·        Select and configure sensors, actuators, PLCs, SCADA, and other control equipment suited to harsh environments.

·        Support design and development of electrical systems for prototype and demonstration facilities.

·        Work closely with process, thermal, and mechanical engineers to figure out how to make novel equipment operate safely, reliably, and effectively.

·        Ensure design process considers safety, reliability, maintainability, operability, and cost effectiveness.

·        Take an active role in commissioning, troubleshooting, and operational support of plant systems.

 

Position Specific Required Qualifications:

•       A Bachelor degree in a relevant field of science or engineering (i.e. Electrical/Electronic engineering and/or Computer engineering)

•       Familiarity with LabView software

The successful candidate will play a leading role in advancing the innovation, service development, and research coordination activities of the APAC Labs in the context of STARC. Working closely with the management of APAC Labs, the appointee will coordinate the organization and operation of the APAC Labs team and infrastructure, ensuring the effective implementation and management of research and service activities at the intersection of the humanities with science and technology. A core aspect of the position will be the strategic development of APAC Labs’ services, focusing on the expansion and sustainability of its analytical and diagnostic capacities, and the promotion of innovative applications for cultural heritage research and preservation.

 

The successful candidate will develop and drive initiatives that tackle major challenges in the field and enhance knowledge and technology transfer as well as foster partnerships with public authorities, research institutions, SMEs, and cultural organizations. 2.      Support the management, organization, and daily operation of the APAC Labs team, infrastructure, and ongoing research and service projects at the intersection of the humanities with science and technology.

The successful candidate will work with the Medical Physics group within the PERSPECT project and will be responsible to support and organize the development of patient-specific new tomographic reconstruction techniques.

The PERSPECT project aims to enhance the accuracy of Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) imaging in the detection of small lesions and brain damage through personalized tomographic techniques that accurately describe the physical processes of photon scattering and attenuation in relation to the patient’s anatomy.

Furthermore, the successful candidate will validate the proposed methodology through extensive simulation and experimental studies to ensure robustness and reliability in clinical settings and develop specific software algorithms by using state of the art programming tools running on HPC.

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a new faculty member at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor in the broader area of computational science and technology, to join the Institute’s CaSToRC Centre on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Athalassa’s Campus.

The selected faculty applicant will enhance the competencies of the Institute in one or more of the following research areas:

(i)               foundation models and efficient training/adaptation methods on HPC systems,

(ii)              generative AI and multimodal learning,

(iii)            causal representation learning and counterfactual reasoning,

(iv)            robustness, safety, and trustworthy ML (including interpretability and fairness),

(v)              continual, federated, and edge learning,

(vi)            ML for scientific discovery.

Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in AI and ML methodologies complemented with experience in the utilization of advanced computing technologies such as HPC and/or cloud computing.

The selected applicant will implement and advance the research agenda of the Institute in general and of CaSToRC in particular in close collaboration with faculty, research staff and the leadership of CyI. As a faculty member, an aptitude and/or experience in mentoring and teaching doctoral and master’s students is necessary as the successful candidate will be expected to actively contribute to the Institute’s graduate program. The successful candidate is expected to support and research activities within EU-funded projects hosted at the PROTEAS research facility, focusing on concentrated solar power (CSP), thermal energy storage (TES), and polygeneration systems. The work will involve both experimental activities (instrumentation, preparation of the experimental setup, sampling and support on testing) as well as data-oriented tasks (data post-treatment, analysis).

Particularly, the Research Technical Assistant will be engaged in the TransNational Accesses (TNA) activities related to i) operation and optimization of CSP and TES systems, ii) integration of solar energy with desalination and brine treatment processes, and iii) hybrid renewable energy systems and storage technologies.                                                                                                                                                     

More specifically the successful candidate will work on TNA activities within the EU funded project RISEnergy. Furthermore, the successful candidate will be involved in tasks such as data collection, performance evaluation of pilot systems and concepts, and support in the development of technical reports.

·        Collection, processing, and analysis of experimental data.

·        Support in the preparation of reports, and technical documentation.

·        Support in dissemination and outreach activities.

·        Daily maintenance of the scientific equipment of the PROTEAS Facility.

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated professional to join the Institute’s Technical Services and Support (TSS) Unit on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Athalassa’s Campus.

 

The successful candidate will hold the position of Senior Research Coordination Officer and be responsible for the day-to-day management of the European Digital Innovation Hub (“DiGiNN EDIH”) project activities.

 

DiGiNN is implemented by a consortium of several organisations in Cyprus, coordinated by the CyI, that functions as one-stop shop to support the digital transformation of Small and Medium Sized Entreprises and the public sector through the provision of access to technical expertise and experimentation in digital technologies, as well as through financing advice, training, and skills development that are needed for a successful digital transformation. DiGiNN is co-funded by the Digital Europe Programme of the European Commission and the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation, and Digital Policy. The DiGiNN project started its operations in 2022 and will run until 2029.

 

Under the guidance of the DiGiNN Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day management of all project activities. This is a hands-on role requiring a proactive individual who can ensure the project's work plan is implemented efficiently, on schedule, and on budget. The Senior Research Coordination Officer serves as the central hub for all operational matters and a key driver for the project's success. They act as the central point of contact for the grant consortium, the European Commission, and any external partners and stakeholders. Therefore, the successful candidate should have excellent project management and interpersonal skills, with strong capacities for generating and maintaining contacts in the business and governmental sectors. Finally, the successful candidate will contribute to the implementation of the DiGiNN project, especially the development and the delivery of services to its customers.

 

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

1.       To be responsible for the planning, coordination and monitoring (administrative, financial, technical) of the DiGiNN EU-funded project (timing, reporting, and deliverables) under the guidance provided by the DiGiNN Manager.

2.       To contribute to the Key Performance Indicators monitoring, risk management, project output quality control and Data Management Plan.

3.       To contribute to the planning, coordination and management (administrative, financial, technical) of the operations of the European Digital Innovation Hub (EDIH).

4.       To undertake communications with the European Commission services regarding the DiGiNN project.

5.       To promote and manage the collaboration of the EDIH with innovative technology companies, public organizations and ecosystem stakeholders.

6.       To act as a liaison between service recipients and the consortium technical/business development teams.

7.       To contribute to the improvement of existing and the development of new services within the hub.

8.       To deliver services to EDIH customers in his/ her domain of expertise

9.       To organize and participate as a speaker in various events (training events, raising awareness events, networking and community building)

10.   To contribute to the implementation of the marketing, communication and dissemination plan.

11.   To contribute to the smooth collaboration between the DiGiNN partners.

12.   To undertake any task and initiative in relation to her/his appointment, that contribute to the sustainability of the EDIH, including the development of new initiatives that support and expand the operations of the EDIH.

Position Specific Required Qualifications:

·       Master’s degree in any scientific field

·       3-year relevant experience

·       Excellent knowledge of oral and written English and Greek

·       Strong technical and business writing skills

·       Ability to present to medium and large audiences

 

Position Preferred Qualifications:

·       Experience with projects in the field of IT or understanding technology areas such as AI, Cybersecurity or HPC or product management

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a new faculty member at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor in the broader area of computational science and technology, to join the Institute’s CaSToRC Centre on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Athalassa’s Campus.

The selected faculty applicant will enhance the competencies of the Institute in one or more of the following research areas:

(i)                  Combinatorial Scientific Computing (with AI-driven methods),

(ii)                Robust AI and Uncertainty Quantification (for ML models),

(iii)               Large-Scale Optimization (leveraging AI and ML techniques), and

(iv)               Digital Twins (utilizing ML approaches for simulation, optimization, and real-time integration of digital twins in complex systems).

Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in AI and ML methodologies complemented with experience in the utilization of advanced computing technologies such as HPC and/or cloud computing. Priority in consideration for hiring will be given to the highest rank where qualified applicants are identified.

The selected applicant will implement and advance the research agenda of the Institute in general and of CaSToRC in particular in close collaboration with faculty, research staff and the leadership of CyI. As a faculty member, an aptitude and/or experience in mentoring and teaching Doctoral and Master’s students is necessary. The successful candidate will be expected to actively contribute to the Institute’s graduate program. 8.       Contributing to the development and implementation of facilities appropriate to the research of The Cyprus Institute;

9.       Communicating the results and implications of research conducted in CaSToRC and The Institute at all levels, including academic, popular, and policy-related.

 

Position Specific Required Qualifications:

·       PhD in in Computational Sciences, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, or a closely related discipline.

·       Proven research and academic record of international standing. 

·       Experience in mentoring and teaching graduate students depending on the rank they are applying for (an absolute requirement for the Associate Professor rank).

·       Teaching and postgraduate training record, appropriate for the rank the candidate is applying for.

·       Proficiency in spoken and written English.

The successful candidate will be involved in advancing digital approaches to the management and simulation of the built environment through Building Information Modelling (BIM), parametric modelling, data management, and interoperable data workflows. This position focuses on developing innovative methodologies for heritage documentation, energy- and climate-performance studies, and standards-based interoperability. The role emphasizes on rigorous data standards, scalable management of multidisciplinary datasets and the translation of research outputs into heritage policy and practice.

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate a solid academic performance, expertise in digital heritage technologies, and strong soft skills, such as analytical thinking and problem solving.

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

·       Developing BIM workflows for historic buildings and sites, integrating archival, survey and diagnostic data.

·       Studying building energy performance using parametric modelling approaches and simulation tools to optimize heritage building sustainability.

·       Ensuring data interoperability across BIM and Open BIM authoring software (Autodesk Revit/Dynamo, Rhinoceros/Grasshopper, IFC/OpenBIM) and heritage-specific platforms and repositories.

·       Authoring custom scripts or visual-programming routines for data harmonisation.

·       Implementing FAIR-compliant data-management plans, utilising ontologies and controlled vocabularies (e.g., CIDOC CRM, Getty AAT) to maximise re-use and long-term preservation.

·       Publishing peer-reviewed articles, technical reports and open datasets/wprkflows, present findings at international conferences/workshops and non-specialized audiences, including heritage professionals and policymakers.

·       Contributing to competitive grant proposals.

·       Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams across CyI research centres.

 

Position Specific Required Qualifications:

·       Thorough knowledge of data-exchange and interoperability standards (IFC, linked-data approaches) within the AEC sector.
