The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated Researcher to join the Environmental Predictions Department (EPD) of CARE-C Centre of Excellence on a full-time basis (100%) for its premises in Athalassas Campus.

Researcher(s) needed under the framework of the PACIFIC project implementation, Post-doctoral Research Fellow(s) in Atmospheric Sciences

The successful candidate will work under the framework of PACIFIC project implementation. In addition, the successful candidate will contribute to the research objectives of the EPD, within the wider framework of national and/or international research projects in:

·       Atmospheric and climate/earth system modelling and analysis tools

·       Aircraft Emission inventories, modelling and analysis

·       Aviation non-CO2 climate impacts through global climate-chemistry modelling

·       Modelling impacts of new particle formation on aerosol/cloud formation and climate impacts 

 

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

·       Model inclusion of emission inventories from global aviation

·       Contribution to global climate-chemistry modelling with different emission scenarios for aircraft non-CO2 climate impacts

·       Participation in CERN CLOUD Experiment campaigns at CERN

·       Presentation of results in conferences and meetings and participation in journal publications

·       Contribution to research proposal preparation, project (scientific) reporting & project management

·       Supervision and guidance of Research Assistants and Students

 

Position Specific Required Qualifications:

·       PhD in Natural / Mathematical Sciences and/or Environmental Sciences/Engineering

·       Programming skills (Fortran/Python)

·       Visualization of netCDF model data

·       Understanding of physical and mathematical concepts

·       Numeracy and calculus skills

·       Willingness to travel and spend time in Partner organizations

·       Authored peer-reviewed journal publications and presented in international conferences

Position Specific Preferred Qualifications:

    The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join the Institute as a post-doctoral Fellow in the areas of High-Performance Computing (HPC), computational sciences and computational materials. The

    successful candidate will join the EuroCC3 project, and will be working on projects with industry/academia/public sector, to support the EuroHPC National Competence Center (NCC) of Cyprus.

    About the EuroCC3 project: EuroCC3 is a pan-European project, involving over 30 countries, with the main objective of advancing the competencies of European communities in High-Performance Computing. The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC) of the Cyprus Institute is the National Competence Centre for HPC, and as part of EuroCC3, aims to promote advanced technologies in Cyprus, with a focus on HPC, computational modeling/simulation. The main aims for EuroCC3 in Cyprus include strengthening these technical competencies of the island, advancing competitiveness in research and innovation, improving the effectiveness of government services and promoting innovation by engaging with industry. Particular effort is placed on maximizing the socioeconomic impact of advanced technologies through increased collaboration with industry, the public sector, and academia and other national projects.

    Position Description: The successful candidate will be working on support projects that mostly involve HPC and Computational Sciences. The main goal of these projects will be to enable academic, public and private organizations in Cyprus to develop their HPC and computational modelling skills and to benefit from the growing potential of these technologies. The selected candidate will be working closely with CyI Faculty, research staff and research engineers, as well as with external organizations towards achieving this goal. This position offers a unique opportunity for research and development in HPC and computational sciences methods and interacting with both researchers/developers and users of these technologies.

     

    Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

    ·        Research, development and use of novel methods in any of the following: HPC, computational science and technology, computational material science, modeling and simulation.

    ·        Engagement with academia, industry, and public-sector organisations to promote HPC services

    ·        Contribution to HPC service delivery, including providing first-line user support, assisting users with basic use of HPC systems and workflows, supporting users in applying for access to national and European HPC resources, support users with code porting, performance optimisation, and workflows, support small-scale computational pilots demonstrating effective HPC use.

    ·        Contribution to user needs analysis and service management, including engaging with users from academia, industry, and the public sector to identify needs, shaping, improving, and coordinating the HPC services offered by the NCC, acting as a technical liaison between users and national or European HPC infrastructures

    ·        Optimization and adaption of existing software to benefit from HPC.

    ·        Contribution to project reports and deliverables and other NCC activities as required

    ·        Contribution to outreach, communication, and networking activities of the NCC, including support and maintaining communication channels (website, announcements, promotional material), organising and supporting workshops, information days, and stakeholder events.

    ·        Support in training activities including assisting in the preparation and delivery of hands-on training sessions, support capacity-building and train-the-trainer activities

      The successful candidate will contribute to the research activities of the ERA Chair funded project QUEST: Quantum Computing for Excellence in Science and Technology, under the leadership of the ERA Chairholder Karl Jansen. CyI offers a world-class, multidisciplinary research environment with strong interactions across physics, mathematics, and computer science.

      Candidates are expected to have a strong background in quantum computing or quantum information, with research interests that may include (but are not limited to):

                   Quantum algorithms and complexity

                   Quantum many-body systems and quantum simulation

                   Lattice gauge theories and high-energy or condensed-matter physics

                   Number theory and cryptography in a quantum-computational context.

      Depending on their expertise and interests, the successful candidate will work on applications ranging from fundamental physics to mathematically driven quantum algorithms and cryptography. 

      A significant degree of research independence, initiative, and the ability to contribute original ideas is expected.

      Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

      The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to research activities including, but not limited to:

      1.      Quantum computing for models in lattice gauge theories and condensed matter physics

        Driven by a mission to advance the common good, CyI is establishing a comprehensive national AI capacity, positioning itself as a key driver of digital transformation through DiGiNN, a one-stop shop co-funded by the European Commission and the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation, and Digital Policy to support the AI-based digital transformation of Cypriot SMEs and the public sector, and its High-Performance Computing Facility (HPCF) that was appointed as the national AI Infrastructure.

        The Cyprus Institute invites applications for highly motivated professionals to apply for 4 positions of Research Technical Scientist-Computer/Software Engineer (Junior or Senior Positions according to the candidate's qualifications and experience) on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at the Nicosia Campus.

        These roles will support the joint operation of the HPCF and DiGiNN, engage in a diverse matrix of activities across a unified value chain, manage access to the latest hardware, including NVIDIA B200 and RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell nodes. The candidates will get involved in diverse areas ranging from supporting "standard" users adopting state-of-the-art open-weights models to assisting high-level research units in complex, research-driven engineering. They will also act as the technical engine for DiGiNN’s "Test Before Invest" services, directly impacting the digital maturity of Cyprus. Moreover, they will orchestrate and deliver technical training, contributing to the national upskilling mandate.

        The European Digital Innovation Hub in Cyprus, DiGiNN, is a strategic consortium acting as a national "one-stop-shop" to accelerate the digital transformation of Cypriot SMEs and the public sector. Co-funded by the EU and the Cypriot government, it provides a set of free services ranging from ‘testing before invest’ services (AI, HPC, Cybersecurity) and digital skills training to investment support and ecosystem networking.

        The CyI High-Performance Computing Facility (HPCF) provides advanced computing ICT services and supports the activities of CyI and its Research Centres. The HPCF is the national supercomputing facility for Cyprus and provides compute and data resources to the research and innovation community of Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean region.

        The following positions are open:

        ·        MLOPs Engineer – 2 positions

        ·        Data Engineer – 1 position

        ·        Systems Engineer – 1 position

         

        Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

        (a) MLOPs Engineer (Junior, Mid-level, Senior - depending on experience, level of responsibility and autonomy)

        ·        End-to-end delivery and technical integrity of all AI and data-driven services

        ·        Integrate functional AI prototypes (TRL 6) into working, scalable pilot systems on the HPCF's AI infrastructure

        ·        Build automated MLOps pipelines to manage Continuous Integration (CI) of code and Continuous Deployment (CD) of model artifacts

        ·        Execute and manage standard fine-tuning or training jobs on NVIDIA B200/RTX nodes using pre-cleaned data and standard scripts

        ·        Wrap fine-tuned models into secure, scalable inference services (e.g., REST APIs) for client test applications

        ·        Conduct performance benchmarking, load testing, and final verification of non-functional requirements like latency and uptime

        ·        Develop deployment architecture guides, software versions, and container configurations for market handoff

        ·        Provide the human capability that allows SMEs to utilize high-performance hardware for "Test Before Invest" services

        ·        Deliver technical content for training curricula

        (b) Data Engineer (Junior, Mid level- depending on experience, level of responsibility and autonomy)

        ·        Conduct Data Readiness Assessments and design ETL pipelines to clean and structure messy datasets

        ·        Implement data preprocessing workflows and quality checks to ensure raw data is optimized for model fine-tuning and inference

        ·        Execute standard fine-tuning/training scripts for established models (e.g., LLMs, Computer Vision) on the B200/RTX clusters

        ·        Validate model performance against client KPIs to ensure technical viability

        ·        Support the implementation of the TRL 7/8 engineering pipeline within the High-Performance Computing Facility (HPCF)

        (c) Systems Engineer (Junior, Mid-level- depending on experience, level of responsibility and autonomy)

        ·        Infrastructure Management: Manage installation, configuration, and maintenance of HPC hardware, servers, and storage systems

        ·        System Monitoring: Monitor health infrastructure to ensure high availability and performance; respond to alerts

        ·        Technical Support: Provide technical support to users, troubleshooting hardware, software, and connectivity issues across varying levels of complexity

        ·        OS Administration: Administer Linux operating systems, including provisioning, patching, updates, and security hardening

        ·        Documentation: Maintain comprehensive and accurate documentation of system configurations, inventory, and operational procedures

        ·        Advanced Support: Collaborate with the team on the deployment and management of virtualization, container technologies, and network configurations

         

        The successful candidates will work in an international, multi-disciplinary and pluri-cultural context and in collaboration with major European research institutes. 

        Note: Depending on the level of experience relevant to the position acquired after completing their degree, the selected candidates will be offered positions that match their specializations and qualifications.

        Position Specific Required Qualifications:

        Applicants to all positions must hold at least a BA/BSc in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or in a related technical discipline or a BSc in Physical Science, or Engineering combined with work experience in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Development, or related technical experience.  In general:

        1.      Junior Computer/Software Engineer: no additional experience required, however an additional year of relevant work experience will be considered an advantage

        2.      Mid-level Computer/Software Engineer: additional 2 years relevant work experience

        3.      Senior Computer/Software Engineer: additional 4 years of relevant work experience

         

        Additional Specific qualifications required:

        For Junior MLOPs Engineer:

        ·        Good understanding of the MLOps lifecycle, including model versioning and deployment.

        ·        Ability to handle TRL 7/8 engineering support and turn TRL lower research into deployable solutions.

        ·        Working knowledge of automated pipelines for CI/CD and Continuous Training (CT).

        ·        Knowledge of API development and implementing security hardening measures for operational environments.

        ·        Competency in setting up logging and monitoring systems for tracking latency, throughput, and error rates.

        ·        Containerization Skills, knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes orchestration.

        ·        Programming: Proficiency in Python and shell scripting for automating standard fine-tuning tasks. 

        ·        Technical Writing: Ability to assist in creating technical documentation and deployment guides for complex computational infrastructures and software platforms.

        For Mid-level/Senior MLOPs Engineer:

        ·        Experience with Kubernetes-based MLOps platforms (e.g., Kubeflow) for orchestrating large-scale training and fine-tuning workflows

        ·        Experience with TRL 7/8 engineering support and demonstrated ability to turn lower TRL research into deployable solutions.

        ·        Experience in building automated pipelines for CI/CD and Continuous Training (CT).

        ·        Experience of API development and implementing security hardening measures for operational environments.

        For Junior Data Engineer:

        ·        Proficiency in Python and SQL,

        ·        Experience with, or strong motivation to learn, modern MLOps stacks, including experiment tracking, model versioning, automated training and evaluation pipelines, CI/CD for ML, and deployment/monitoring in production or HPC/cloud environments.3. Comfort working in Linux environments and using Git for version control.

        ·        Ability to collaborate with ML engineers and platform teams to operationalize models, ensuring reproducibility, scalability, and maintainability.

        For Mid-level Data Engineer:

        ·        Proficiency in Python and SQL,

        ·        Solid foundation in machine learning and statistical modeling, with the ability to understand, evaluate, and support end-to-end model development pipelines.

        ·        Comfort working in Linux environments and using Git for version control.

        ·        Demonstrated ability to deeply interrogate and validate data, including writing complex SQL queries, performing advanced joins and aggregations, detecting data quality issues (missingness, bias, leakage, drift), and designing robust data validation and feature pipelines.

        ·        Strong analytical mindset to translate raw, heterogeneous data sources into reliable, well-documented datasets suitable for modeling, experimentation, and production use.

            The ERA Chair “One Archaeological Science” project (One Archeological Science – OneArchSci) aims to promote the use of isotope analyses across the archaeological science teams at STARC. The position offers an opportunity to build on the research profile of our material science laboratories within the domain of (inorganic) archaeological materials science, with expertise in geological methodologies such as petrography, mineralogy and chemical (elemental and isotope ratio) analysis methods. We seek candidates who can capitalise on this investment and in addition can contribute to research in environmental archaeology and human bioarchaeology.

            The successful applicant will be expected to be a leader in the development of key research facilities at The Cyprus Institute (continuation of SEM-EDS and optical petrography lab, additional self-acquired laboratory equipment), will develop the use of international analytical facilities in the framework of team science, and will explore the development of such laboratories at CyI. The successful applicant shall work regularly with the other Archaeological Science faculty at STARC for research development in the lab and the field, including the development of isotope-based research.                 The successful candidate will contribute directly to scientific discovery, method and code development, and ERC proposal preparation, working at the interface of density functional theory (DFT), anharmonic lattice dynamics, machine learning force fields, transport, and high-performance computing (HPC).

The successful candidate will help coordinate and execute the day-to-day activities of the EU-funded project GenAI4ED (https://genai4ed.eu/), which explores how Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) can transform learning and teaching.

                    Focus will be placed on evaluating and/or developing state-of-the-art educational tools relying on GenAI methodologies and on coordinating a series of relevant pilot studies at selected Cypriot and EU schools. The pilot studies will assess the GenAI educational tools based on their effect on the educational experience from the student/teacher perspectives.

                    The successful candidate will coordinate the design and execution of the pilot studies, collaborating closely with faculty and research teams at CaSToRC, while being in continuous communication with project partners from diverse disciplines, including AI, software development, education, ethics and psychology.

                        ·        Instrument Compliance: Quality assure nominal operation of aerosol (eg aethalometer, optical particle counter, condensation particle counter) on site and drafting related reports. Quality control environmental measurements remotely following designated protocols and effectively communicate solutions to improve measurement quality to on-site personnel.

                        ·        Facility Management: Conduct regular inspections and maintenance of the air quality monitoring stations of the Cyprus Atmospheric Observatory, including but not limited to making necessary repairs, adjustments, setting up new observation stations, and handling related work.

                        ·        Instrument operation and maintenance: Oversee daily operations of scientific instrumentations (e.g., real-time and offline techniques to measure aerosols, gases and meteorological parameters), regularly inspect, maintain, and calibrate these instruments, ensuring instrument setups, operation, and data quality are compliant with relevant Standard Operation Procedures (ACTIRS, ICOS, GAW). Instruments may be handled remotely.

                          The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated Researcher to join the PROTEAS Facility team of the EEWRC Centre of Institute on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Proteas Facility (Pentakomo).

                          The successful candidate should have a strong background in energy management, software development, smart grids and microgrids, focusing on the co-design and operation of an Energy Management System (EMS) at the state-of-the-art PROTEAS facility.

                          In this role, the successful applicant will develop, optimize, operate, and maintain an EMS that contribute to the efficient management of renewable energy resources. The successful candidate will assume a research role under the guidance of senior researchers and faculty of EEWRC to fully utilise the field of energy management and Distributed Energy Systems to propose, drive and implement relevant research lines.

                          This role is designed for someone eager to work at the forefront of energy research in a dynamic, collaborative environment. The successful candidate will preferably be familiar with a software environment designed for instrument connectivity and control such as NI LabVIEW. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to work with advanced infrastructure that supports cutting-edge projects in energy poly-generation, including thermal energy storage and other renewable energy applications. The work will involve extensive test runs of software developed, aligned with simulations and modelling results generated from scientists at PROTEAS, ensuring seamless integration of renewable technologies and storage into EMS designs. The facility is uniquely positioned to support both fundamental research and practical solutions for industry, giving you a well-rounded experience in both academic and applied research.

                          Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

                          ·        Design and develop, maintain, and enhance the Energy Management System (EMS) built on the existing control architecture of PROTEAS.

                          ·        Optimise EMS operation to ensure efficient management of renewable energy flows between solar, wind, battery, and thermal storage systems.

                          ·        Develop and maintain software tools for system control, data acquisition, and automation — preferably in NI LabVIEW or equivalent platforms.

                          ·        Build smart algorithms to optimize real-time energy production from various sources and consumption across various loads, considering factors like cost, market conditions, and user preferences.

                          ·        Conduct real-time experiments and test runs, validating EMS performance against simulation and modelling results.

                          ·        Collaborate with senior researchers at EEWRC to align EMS development with ongoing research on distributed energy systems and digital twins.

                          ·        Support collaborative R&D projects involving external partners and industrial stakeholders in the areas of smart grids, poly-generation, and thermal energy storage.

                          ·        Document research outcomes, prepare technical reports, and contribute to peer-reviewed publications and project deliverables.

                          ·        Assist with other projects and activities requiring software development and engineering at PROTEAS, as well as such services for the needs of the energy department of the EEWRC at CyI.

                          Position Specific Required Qualifications:

                          ·        PhD in Environmental Sciences or Science or Engineering such as Mechanical, Electrical or Chemical Engineering and Physics

                          ·        Proven experience in Energy Management Systems (EMS) design, optimisation, oroperation for hybrid or distributed energy systems.

                          ·        Knowledge of smart grids, microgrids, and renewable integration (PV, wind, thermalstorage, batteries, etc.) with emphasis on real-time control and co-design methodologies.

                          ·        Experience with system modelling, simulation, and optimisation tools applied to energy systems.

                          ·        Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with ability to work independently and in a multidisciplinary research environment.

                          ·        Strong communication skills in English, both written and oral.

                          ·        Motivation to engage in both academic research and practical implementation within a collaborative international setting.

                           

                          Position Preferred Qualifications:

                          ·        Strong programming and software development skills, ideally including LabVIEW, Python, or MATLAB/Simulink for system control, data acquisition, and analysis.

                          ·        Familiarity with data acquisition, instrumentation, and control systems used in experimental or pilot-scale energy research facilities.

Concurrently, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute in the on-going activities of Energy Division associated with the integration, controls, monitoring and development of database for the scientific fields of: i) Concentrated Solar Power, ii) Energy Storage, iii) Desalination, iv) Polygeneration and Hybridization, v) Microgrids portfolio of the Energy Division at CyI.

                              The successful candidate will be expected to design, develop and integrate Virtual Interfaces to the Main PROTEAS control system and it is expected that they will be in charge of the PROTEAS Database and Data Acquisition systems. The successful candidate will be expected to closely collaborate with the researchers on the implementation of controls / monitoring and automation strategies for specific research activities and projects.

                               

                              Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

                              ·        Maintenance and development of the Monitoring and Control System at CyI PROTEAS Facility at Pentakomo. Selection of appropriate sensors, hardware and software tools are included.

                              ·        Design, testing, construction and optimization of monitoring and control strategies in LabView environment.

                              ·        Implementation and maintenance of database to store and treat scientific data.

                                The successful candidate will work with the Medical Physics group within the PERSPECT project and will be responsible to support and organize the development of patient-specific new tomographic reconstruction techniques.

                                The PERSPECT project aims to enhance the accuracy of Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) imaging in the detection of small lesions and brain damage through personalized tomographic techniques that accurately describe the physical processes of photon scattering and attenuation in relation to the patient’s anatomy.

                                Furthermore, the successful candidate will validate the proposed methodology through extensive simulation and experimental studies to ensure robustness and reliability in clinical settings and develop specific software algorithms by using state of the art programming tools running on HPC.

                                 

                                Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

                                The selected candidate will be required to organize clinical data and to support with the installation of the developed programming code on GPU based HPC farms.

                                Position Specific Required Qualifications:

                                ·       PhD degree in a relevant field of science or engineering (Medical Physics / Computer Engineering / Electrical-Electronic Engineering).

                                ·       Experience in analytic, stochastic or iterative tomographic image reconstruction algorithms applied in Emission Tomography with ionizing or non-ionizing radiation.

                                ·       Proven technical ability to adopt theoretical solutions and to develop computer code to solve tomographic inversion problems.

                                ·       Experience with High Performance Computing (HPC).

                                      The selected faculty applicant will enhance the competencies of the Institute in one or more of the following research areas:

                                      (i)                  Combinatorial Scientific Computing (with AI-driven methods),

                                      (ii)                Robust AI and Uncertainty Quantification (for ML models),

                                      (iii)               Large-Scale Optimization (leveraging AI and ML techniques), and

                                      (iv)               Digital Twins (utilizing ML approaches for simulation, optimization, and real-time integration of digital twins in complex systems).

                                      Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in AI and ML methodologies complemented with experience in the utilization of advanced computing technologies such as HPC and/or cloud computing. Priority in consideration for hiring will be given to the highest rank where qualified applicants are identified.

                                      The selected applicant will implement and advance the research agenda of the Institute in general and of CaSToRC in particular in close collaboration with faculty, research staff and the leadership of CyI. As a faculty member, an aptitude and/or experience in mentoring and teaching Doctoral and Master’s students is necessary.                                         The successful candidate will strengthen the Institute's expertise in atmospheric modelling and environmental data analysis, primarily focusing on developing and applying numerical models for emissions, atmospheric transport and dispersion, and chemical processes. The role involves analyzing and integrating various environmental datasets—including emission inventories, in situ measurements, and remote sensing observations (e.g., from satellites)—to support atmospheric modelling studies that investigate connections to air quality, climate, and public health.

                                        The new faculty should contribute to the research dynamics of the Environmental Predictions Department (EPD) of CARE-C and CyI by pursuing cross-cutting collaborations with related areas, including atmospheric observations, numerical techniques, climate modelling and data science.

                                        Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

                                        ·       Develop and apply state-of-the-art numerical modelling tools of air pollution emissions/transport/concentrations across the Mediterranean - Middle East and various time scales, aligned with the regional focus of CARE-C and (inter)national policies (e.g., EU Green Deal, Paris Agreement, national priorities).

                                        ·       Connect atmospheric observations performed by Environmental Observations Department (EOD) researchers with the modelling work across different departments of CARE-C, to integrate environmental data into studies of air quality and public health effects.

                                        ·       Advise and support of national and international bodies and agencies in the reporting and evaluation of emissions, exposure, and mitigation measures aimed at improving air quality and avoiding socioeconomic costs. 

                                        ·       Provide career opportunities for students and prospects for collaboration projects and funding at both national and international levels (e.g., EU).

                                        ·       PhD in Natural / Mathematical Sciences and/or Environmental Science/Engineering
