The successful candidate, will participate in the research activities of Solar Energy and Desalination (SED) group of the Solar Energy Division of the EEWRC, and in particular will carry out activities related to the Nano4CSP project which aims to reduce the Operation and Maintenance costs and water consumption while increasing the efficiency of a CSP solar collector field, by tuning the properties of self-cleaning surfaces, already developed by some of the project partners for otherindustrial applications, to the specifications of CSP applications. Within the project the main responsibilities of the Cyprus Institute team are related to the development of specifications, the evaluation of the soiling characteristics of the coatings developed within the project, including the water requirements for cleaning.

The Research Assistant is expected to support the research activities of the project.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Experimental and technical field work
  2. Data post-process and analysis using software tools

  4. Perform literature reviews
  5. Support any administrative tasks in relation to the project
  6. Daily measurements at the PROTEAS testing facility of the Cyprus Institute located near Pentakomo (Limassol) and to carry out frequent measurements and desk work at CyI headquarters in Athalassa, Nicosia
  7. Assist in the development of specifications for and anti-soiling coating characteristics
  8. Assist in the experimental measurement and evaluation of mirror soiling and in the estimation of mean solar collector field reflectivities
  9. Assist in the modeling, analysis, design, and optimization of overall energy system configurations
  10. Assist in the implementation of other on-going research activities of the SED group.
  11. Assist in publishing and communicating research findings, drafting of project deliverables.

Qualifications:

    The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a Research Associate (Post-Doctoral Fellow) to pursue research at the interface between materials science modelling and scientific computing. The successful candidate will be actively engaged with ongoing research projects at the Cyprus Institute, and be part of the research team associated with the European Research Area (ERA) Chair in Modelling and Simulation for Engineering Applications (SimEA), led by Prof. Vangelis Harmandaris.

     

    About the SimEA ERA Chair project

    The SimEA project aims to consolidate and upgrade the already substantial activity CaSToRC in computational sciences by introducing a computational engineering component. This will be accomplished by attracting and installing an outstanding cluster of researchers, led by a professor of international stature to maximally utilize and upgrade the existing facilities, and pursue a program of research excellence and innovation. The SimEA ERA Chair is funded by a prestigious EU ERA Chair award of 2.5 Million Euro, a five-year grant.

     

    Position Description

    The SimEA Research Associate (Post-Doctoral Fellow) will pursue research in Computational Science and Engineering with emphasis on multi-scale modelling, simulations and application of data analytics approaches for the study of complex nanostructured materials. The selected applicant will be integrated in the team managed by the ERA Chair and will be actively engaged with the on-going research at CaSToRC associated with HPC, Data Analytics methods and the development of novel algorithms for large-scale computational infrastructures.

     

    The appointment is for a period of 2 years, with the option of renewal subject to the needs of the Cyprus Institute and the availability of funds. An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate. Travel funding will also be provided for attending training events and presenting at prestigious conferences globally.

    Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:

    The successful candidate will be engaged in one of the following activities, according to the area of specialisation:

    1. Multi-scale computational modelling of complex nanostructured materials, such as thin films, polymer nanocomposites, interfacial systems, proteins and peptides.
    2. Development and application of Data Analytics and Machine Learning methods for the development of atomistic and mesoscopic models for complex molecular systems.

     

    In addition, the SimEA Post-Doctoral Fellow will be involved in:

    1. Developing algorithms and codes for simulations/data analytics in engineering applications.
    2. Performing large-scale computations in computational engineering.
    3. Analysing results and assume a leading role in the preparation of research manuscripts.
    4. Writing proposals for accessing computational resources.

     

    Requirements

    1. A PhD degree in Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Life Sciences, Computational Engineering or Computer Science
    2. Previous experience in molecular simulations and/or data analytics methods for complex molecular systems.
    3. Previous experience in at least two of the following areas: multi-scale modelling, molecular dynamics, statistical methods, data analytics, and stochastic (Monte Carlo) methods.
    4. Publications in high-impact factor journals.
    5. Participation at top international scientific conferences
    6. Excellent knowledge of statistics and data analytics methods;

      The Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory (USRL; http://usrl.cyi.ac.cy), a flagship facility of the Cyprus Institute (CyI) develops and operates Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) applied in various field of research, including atmospheric sciences, environmental monitoring, and various image based earth observations.

      Due to the increasing demand in flying operations mostly related to research EU projects (Atmospheric Measurements, Aerial Imaging), The Cyprus Institute is seeking a UAS/UAV Pilot to actively contribute in flying operations as well as maintenance of the UAS as well as further development of the UASs.

      The successful candidate is expected to contribute with the maintenance and repairs on the UASs and support scientists and engineers of the team to integrate new instruments on board the UAVs.

      The position will be on a full-time basis for a fixed term of two years, renewable depending on performance and availability of funds. The rank and salary of the position will depend on the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

      The successful candidate will be under the supervision of the Head of the Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory of CARE-C.

      The successful candidate will be a member of the Research and Development Team of the USRL under the supervision of the USRL manager and CARE-C Director.

       

      Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:

      The successful candidate will be carrying out the following activities:

      1. Coordinating and actively participating in ground and flight operation efforts including mission planning and inspections
      2. Developing and Maintaining a high level of proficiency in the operations of the UAVs
      3. Responsible of maintaining the airworthiness of the UAV fleet to be available at any time
      4. Responsible for safeguarding flight operations
      5. Contributing in the development of the Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) (Platforms, Systems and Ground Control Station)
      6. Conducting scheduled Test Flights for the purpose of the development and optimization of the platforms and the avionic/navigation systems
      7. Ensuring compliance with service guidance, Institute’s policy and procedures

      Required Qualifications

      1. At least 1 year of flight experience in unmanned aircraft is required either as a recreational, sport, private, or commercial pilot
      2. Knowledge of and experience in flying UAV / RC models up to 45 Kg Take-Off Weight
      3. Knowledge of basic Aerodynamics and flight theory
      4. Good experience in building and maintaining advanced RC models (fixed-wing and/or Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) platforms)

        The CARE-C Centre of excellence invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Atmospheric Sciences to join the Cyprus atmospheric Observatory (CAO, https://cao.cyi.ac.cy/) team. The position offers excellent possibilities for development of highly motivated individuals in the framework of the EU-H2020 “EMME-CARE” (Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre; http://emme-care.cyi.ac.cy/; TEAMING Grant no. 856612), within which the Cyprus Institute established a “Centre of Excellence” in Climate and Atmosphere research for the EMME region in cooperation with EU Advanced Partners (Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Germany; University of Helsinki in Finland; and CEA in France).

        The successful candidates will contribute in advancing the CARE-C’s research and innovation agenda in its scientific focus of Environmental Observations area through experimental research on reactive trace gases and particularly on Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC). A newly acquired Proton Transfer Reaction – Time of Flight – Mass Spectrometer (PTR-ToF-MS) will be used as the core instrumentation for the research investigations.

        Depending on their skills and interests, the selected candidates will undertake different responsibilities as below:

         -Operation of the PTR-ToF-MS to monitor anthropogenic VOCs and identify the regional sources and sinks, through observations and atmospheric chemistry investigations (in the frames of ACTRIS network). The regional sources will be investigated both with ground-based observations and with drone applications for VOC mapping. He/she will operate the PTR-ToF-MS in Cyprus and participate in numerous international field campaigns in Middle East, starting with a campaign in Qatar that will take place in spring 2022.

        - Operation of the PTR-ToF-MS to monitor biogenic VOCs in the soil-biosphere-atmosphere interface and witin the context of climate change in the East Mediterranean and Middle East (EMME) region. He/she will be responsible for performing flux observations of bVOCs in forested and agricultural environments and link the emissions with plant physiology (using a portable photosynthesis system) and environmental drivers.

        The positions will be on a full-time basis for a fixed period and duration based on the responsibilities to be undertaken as described above, and are renewable depending on performance and availability of funds.

         

        Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:

        1. Responsible for the operation of a PTR-ToF-MS system in the laboratory and in field campaigns, following international standard operating procedures;
        2. Responsible for data processing using advanced software tools;

            1. Contribute in the development of innovative systems for nanoparticle synthesis and characterization 
            2. Contribute in the writing up of scientific publications
            3. Contribute in the writing up of research proposals
            4. Co-supervise research projects/students

            Required Qualifications

            1. PhD in one of the following:
            • Aerosol Science and Technology
            • Experimental Physics, Chemistry or Physical Chemistry
            • Nanosciences and Nanotechnology
            • Electrical and/or Mechanical and/or Chemical and/or Civil and/or Aerospace Engineering
            1. At least two journal publications
            2. Familiarity with particle characterization instrumentation
            3. Familiarity with mass spectrometry
            4. Familiarity with nanomaterial characterization tools
            5. Familiarity with programming languages
            6. Excellent knowledge of English, both verbal and writing

             

            Preferred Qualifications

            1. Research experience in Aerosol Science and Technology

              President of the Cyprus Institute

              The Cyprus Institute (www.cyi.ac.cy) was established as an international science, technology and educational organization to strengthen the research community of Cyprus and to facilitate the development of  a knowledge-based economy in Cyprus. It functions as a research and innovation hub for the Eastern Mediterranean region that through science and technology can promote the cooperation among the people of the Eastern Mediterraean – Middle East region.

               

              The Cyprus Institute (CyI) has been  established by the Cyprus Research and Educational Foundation (CREF), which is governed by an international Board of Trustees with wide experience in leadership in research and public service. Research at the Cyprus Institute is conducted through its four interdisciplinary research centers: the Energy Environment Water Research Center (EEWRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Center (STARC), the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC) and the Climate and Atmosphere Research Center (CARE-C). Its educational activities are pursued through its Graduate School.

               

              Position Description

               

              Reporting to the Board of Trustees of CREF, the President of the CyI exerts leadership of the research, educational and administrative functions of the Institute. Under the guidance of the Board of Trustees and in collaboration with the senior management of the CyI, the President develops the strategies of the Institute and oversees their implementation.

               

              The selected candidate will be located in Cyprus and will be offered a five-year appointment, renewable upon mutual agreement, with an internationally attractive salary and benefits package, commensurate with his/her high degree of responsibility and qualification. The selected candidate may, if his/her background is an academic career, be awarded a tenured Professorship at CyI.

               

              The successful candidate is expected to be a scholar or a managerial leader of international standing with strong leadership skills and extensive experience in research or organizational management. He/she should have good familiarity with the scientific directions pursued by the Institute that can be effectively strengthenedwith his/her involvement, a strong vision of the role of research and of the importance of science and technology capacity building in Cyprus, the Eastern Mediterranean and Europe. Previous experience in institutional building and/or managing complex projects from development to implementation would be a strong advantage. Proficiency in spoken and written English is indispensable, while knowledge of Greek would be an advantage

              The incumbent must have excellent interpersonal skills, with strong skills in managing human resources, and in networking in academic, business, political and governmental circles, as well as in raising research support.

               

              Duties and Responsibilities

               

              In detail, the overall objectives, duties and responsibilities of the President are the following:

               

              • To promote, elaborate and effectively implement the mision of the Insitute
              • To lead the development of CyI as a state-of-the-art research and educational institution
              • To develop CyI’s research and education strategy within the guidelines set down by the Institute’s Board
              • To lead the recruitment and development staffing strategies for the Institute’s research and education divisions, including performance management, development and motivation of the Institute’s research and academic staff members
              • To coordinate the Research Strategy of the Institute’s Centers in collaboration with the Center Directors
              • To oversee the development and implementation of the research budget of the Institute
              • To establish and maintain links with and between CyI’s research sponsors
              • To build networks with the academic, business and political ecosystem in Cyprus, the region and internationally
              • To develop and strengthen the relations with Government and State Institutions
