CyI, coordinator of the Horizon 2020 MSCA-ETN-ITN project Training the next generation of archaeological scientists: Interdisciplinary studies of pre-modern Plasters and Ceramics from the eastern Mediterranean (PlaCe-ITN), offers three fully funded six-month fellowships for the analytical study of premodern pottery from the eastern Mediterranean. This high-profile Innovative Training Network aims at training Early-Stage Researchers to conduct state-of-the-art, science-based research on the provenance, use, and technology of plasters and ceramics, in pre-modern societies in different regions of the eastern Mediterranean.

These short-term Early-Stage Research fellowships are designed for Researchers that are already doctoral students at other institutions and seek to receive training and develop their analytical skills in the interdisciplinary study of archaeological plasters and ceramics. The research to be conducted during these fellowships is expected to directly support and contribute to the main doctoral studies of the applicants, as well as having a close link to the main topic of PlaCe-ITN and the analytical and supervisory capabilities of the CyI. These fellowships will be co-supervised by the CyI and the respective PhD supervisors at the external host universities. 

The short fellowships will take place at the CyI labs with the potential for secondments to other laboratories of the consortium, according to the needs of the pursued doctoral research topics. No short-term fellow will be recruited without full approval of their home institution, and preference will be given to applicants who do not have access to analytical support at their home institution. The selected candidates will need to have already secured the plaster or ceramic materials intended for analysis by the commencement of their fellowships, together with all the necessary permits for their study and sampling by the relevant authorities.

 

During their six-month fellowships at STARC, the fellows will be trained through practice in one or more of the following:

  • Research project design and sampling strategies
  • Sample preparation for analysis (thin sections and/or polished blocks)
  • Analytical techniques for the technological, compositional, microstructural characterisation of plaster or ceramic samples (hhpXRF, petrography, and/or SEM)
  • Data processing
  • Data interpretation and integration in cultural and historical contexts

Secondments within the PlaCe Consortium may be arranged on an individual basis to meet specific analytical or supervisory expertise not available at CyI. The work conducted during each of these six-month fellowships should ideally lead to at least one publication of results in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

According to the eligibility criteria set by the European Commission and the particular MSCA-ITN-2020 call, the recruited Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs) will have to comply with the following conditions:

  • not have resided in Cyprus for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date, and not have carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Cyprus. Short stays, such as holidays, are not taken into account;
  • be — at the date of recruitment — an ‘early-stage researcher’ (i.e., in the first four years of his/her research career and not have a doctoral degree).

    The Cyprus Institute invites applications for an Associate Research Scientist in Atmospheric
    Sciences at the CyI's Climate and Atmosphere Research Center (CARE‐C) in the
    framework of the EU‐H2020 “EMME‐CARE” (Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East Climate and
    Atmosphere Research Centre; http://emme‐care.cyi.ac.cy/; TEAMING Grant no. 856612), and in
    cooperation with EU Advanced Partners (Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Germany; University
    of Helsinki in Finland; and CEA in France).

    Position Description 

    Greenhouse gases (GHG) and pollutants emissions from the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East
    (EMME) region have been rising quickly in the last decade and mitigation efforts will be required to
    keep the goal of the Paris Agreement. In support of national inventories, atmospheric in‐situ and
    satellite observations of greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4) and co‐emitted pollutants (NO2, CO) can be
    used to quantify emissions and their variability in response to human activities and climate change.

    We seek for a motivated researcher in the field of atmospheric modeling and / or data assimilation
    to build and apply inversion models that will reduce uncertainty on greenhouse gas and co‐emitted
    pollutants emissions from the EMME region. The goal is to develop new emissions monitoring tools
    using satellite observations of column integrated CO2 concentrations from OCO2 and OCO3
    instruments and of CH4 and NO2 / CO e.g. from S5P TROPOMI and GOSAT. The main system could
    be the LMDZ PYVAR CIF atmospheric data assimilation system built at LSCE (Laboratoire des Sciences
    du Climate et de l’Environnement, CEA, France) with a regional zoom over the region of interest.

    The selected candidate will be expected to develop a successful research activity on modeling
    atmospheric GHGs within CARE‐C (Climate and Atmosphere Research Center, The Cyprus Institute,
    Cyprus), as part of a long‐term collaboration with the LSCE, under the responsibility of Prof. Philippe
    Ciais and Dr. Frédéric Chevallier. The main output will be new estimates of greenhouse gases and
    pollutants emissions with a low latency, in support of regional mitigation awareness and policies.
    High profile scientific publications are expected from the research as well as policy relevant material
    such as comparison with official inventories, and regular bulletins of the greenhouse gas budgets of
    different countries and cities in the Mediterranean and Middle East area.

    Supervision and co‐supervision of graduate students, the development of new research projects and
    involvement into existing ones will be facilitated and supported by scientific and administrative staff
    at CARE‐C. The successful candidate will be expected to support new research thrust with the
    highest international standards, leveraging CyI and CARE‐C resources (45 million euros in the
    framework of EMME‐CARE) and utilizing the highly competitive research facilities of the Cyprus
    Institute such as the “Cy‐Tera” HPC (http://web.cytera.cyi.ac.cy/) and the Cyprus Atmospheric
    Observatory (CAO, http://www.cyi.ac.cy/index.php/cao.html) which is part of international
    networks (WMO‐GAW, EMEP, ACTRIS, TCCON).

    The successful candidate will be working in a highly international team at CARE‐C (100 research staff
    from 15 different countries), within a green and peaceful environment (Athalassa Forestry Park)
    next to all commodities, where English is the exclusive language (for both research and
    administration). This position may be renewed and possibly turned into an indefinite working
    contract based on performance and funds availability.

    Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:

    • Adapt and apply the atmospheric inversion system LMDZ‐PYVAR to quantify greenhouse
      gas and pollutant emissions in the Mediterranean and Middle east region
    • Compare top‐down atmospheric estimates of emissions with bottom‐up activity data and
      inventories and analyze their mutual consistency
    • Work collaboratively with the Greenhouse Gases Emissions Group at CARE‐C and the
      SATINV team at LSCE
    • Write peer reviewed scientific publications about the result of the research
    • Develop new research projects with regional stakeholders and research teams in CARE‐C
      and teaming partners (CEA, MPIC, Univ. Helsinki)
    • Supervise graduate students and staff working on the relevant projects

    Required Qualifications

    • PhD degree on Research Fields such as Atmospheric physics, air quality, greenhouse gas atmospheric modeling

          The successful candidate, will participate in the research activities of Solar Energy and Desalination (SED) group of the Solar Energy Division of the EEWRC, and in particular will carry out activities related to the Nano4CSP project which aims to reduce the Operation and Maintenance costs and water consumption while increasing the efficiency of a CSP solar collector field, by tuning the properties of self-cleaning surfaces, already developed by some of the project partners for otherindustrial applications, to the specifications of CSP applications. Within the project the main responsibilities of the Cyprus Institute team are related to the development of specifications, the evaluation of the soiling characteristics of the coatings developed within the project, including the water requirements for cleaning.

          The Research Assistant is expected to support the research activities of the project.

           

          Duties and Responsibilities:

              The successful candidate will enhance research on energy policy and planning within the activities of the Energy Division of EEWRC. This field is a growing part of EEWRC’s portfolio and is expected to increase its activities in view of the needs arising from the global energy transition and the need to address national, regional and global decarbonization challenges. The main research topics, among others, include long-term energy modelling, impact assessment of energy policy scenarios and technoeconomic assessment of energy technologies. These topics are considered central to the connections between the centers of the Cyprus Institute, vital for the continuous collaboration with local and regional policy makers, and necessary for CyI’s mission to become a regional hub of high-quality energy policy research.

              The successful candidate is expected to have a background in natural sciences or engineering, with a doctoral degree related to energy systems modelling and strong research output and post-doctoral experience in quantitative modelling and simulations of energy and climate policies. They are expected to support current energy policy research at CyI, but also be able to attract research funding from national or international sources in order to initiate new research in energy policy.

              The initial period of the appointment will be for a duration of two years, with the option of renewal subject to performance and availability of funds. The annual salary for the position will be internationally competitive based on the experience level of the selected candidate. In addition to the salary, the Associate Research Scientist will have a career development plan tailored to her or his specific circumstances, interests, experience and skills, which will include training at CyI and participation in international conferences and events.                 In order to further extend its research activities in the field of heritage protection and monitoring through UAV-based systems as well as to further develop new aerial imaging applications in the field of surveillance to prevent looting and illegal archaeological excavations, the Cyprus Institute is seeking for a Post-Doctoral Fellow in Remote Sensing/Imaging for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) with experience in data acquisition, live data streaming and processing of aerial remote sensing data.

                This position is supported by the ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­RIF CPU_0619_0060 project SHIELD (Safeguard Heritage in Endangered Looted Districts) funded through the Joint Programming Initiative on Cultural Heritage (JPICH).

                SHIELD Project aims at designing and building an artificially intelligent Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) to patrol archaeological and heritage sites using the latest technologies in imaging techniques, live data streaming, decentralized (onboard) processing, Machine Learning, and flight data management.

                The customized surveillance device is expected to be autonomously deployed from a ground station (helipad) on scheduled operations both during night and day routine flights. The system is foreseen to take-off, patrol a targeted area, stream live data, land, recharge the batteries and stand-by for the next scheduled operation. The final goals are represented by the identification of looting activities in real-time, the collection of data for monitoring purposes on the medium and long-term period and the creation of a deterrence strategy to target specific criminal behavior.

                SHIELD has been built around the scope and objectives of the JPICH call aiming to address different thematic areas. SHIELD final goal is to develop a new tool purposely tailored for its integration into thematic policies and strategies for the protection of cultural heritage, implemented by the relevant stakeholders such as Departments of Antiquities and Police Corps.

                The successful candidate will be a member of the Research and Development Team of the USRL under the supervision of the SHIELD Project Leader.

                 

                Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:

                1. Processing and Analysis of UAV based remote sensing data using Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence algorithms.
                2. Flight Planning, Image Acquisition and Processing for 3D reconstruction and change detection using Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence algorithms.
                3. Cooperate with PhD/MSc students and develop small applications for data acquisition and data manipulation of their scientific instruments.
                4. Assist in the development of software/hardware for image acquisition and processing systems.

                    The Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory (USRL; http://usrl.cyi.ac.cy), a flagship facility of the Cyprus Institute (CyI) develops and operates Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) applied in various field of research, including atmospheric sciences, environmental monitoring, and various image based earth observations.

                    Due to the increasing demand in flying operations mostly related to research EU projects (Atmospheric Measurements, Aerial Imaging), The Cyprus Institute is seeking a UAS/UAV Pilot to actively contribute in flying operations as well as maintenance of the UAS as well as further development of the UASs.

                    The successful candidate is expected to contribute with the maintenance and repairs on the UASs and support scientists and engineers of the team to integrate new instruments on board the UAVs.

                    The position will be on a full-time basis for a fixed term of two years, renewable depending on performance and availability of funds. The rank and salary of the position will depend on the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

                    The successful candidate will be under the supervision of the Head of the Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory of CARE-C.
