The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit Science and Technology oriented Educational and Research Institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres: The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC), the Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC), the Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C), and the Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC). Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s culture.
The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join the Institute as a Health and Safety Officer in the Operations/Administration Division. The Health and Safety Officer will be responsible for ensuring that the Institute adheres to all applicable health and safety regulations whilst also providing support to staff, researchers and faculty managers in their efforts to maintain a safe workplace.
In addition, the successful candidate will be required to support the OHS office with the preparation of inspections, reports, guidelines, establishment of new templates, procedures and revision of the work already done. The candidate must be able to work following the ISO standards 9001, 14001 and 45001.
The initial period of the appointment will be for a fixed-term period with the possibility of renewal, depending on performance and availability of funds. An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.
Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:
- Responsible of execution of departmental administrative daily activities including the following:
- Maintenance and update of records
- Preparation and carrying out correspondence
- Handling documentation
- Making suggestions for general departmental improvements
- Maintain an in-depth understanding of rules and regulations, relevant laws and guidelines that apply to Health and Safety
- Liaising with relevant Governmental and non-Governmental departments and authorities for matters relevant to Health and Safety
- Ensure that safety inspections are carried out, fire drills and fire alarms are correctly reported, safety inspections, risk assessments and lone working procedures are managed and employees are aware of their responsibilities
- Prepare recommendations for prevention and protection measures
- Help to develop effective H&S policies and procedures
- Ensure the Institute meets its statutory obligations in all areas pertaining to health, safety and welfare at work, including statutory training and reporting
- Ensure the completion and regular review of risk assessments for all lab activities, field works, as well as for the operation of equipment
- Ensure that all accidents or near-misses are documented, investigated and recommended improvements are implemented
- Support Health and Safety inspections in CyI premises
- Support with the organization and implementation of relevant inductions and trainings
- Ensure full and accurate health and safety and training records are maintained
- Instruct staff in the proper use of equipment and conducts routine tests
- Counsel individuals on any personal or domestic problems affecting their work
- Promoting and maintaining safety in the work place
- Perform related duties and assigned
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a similar field, such as engineering or architecture or related field
- Professional Qualification/Accreditation in Occupational Health and Safety
- Previous experience in a Health and Safety related position
- Excellent IT skills in MS Office and particularly in Excel as well as ability in the use of other software and systems
- Demonstrate knowledge of ISO standards 9001, 14001 and 45001
- Demonstrated development ability, outstanding organizational and analytical skills
- Ability to work under pressure and with short deadlines
- Ability to work independently and under supervision
- Ability to multitask and manage competing priorities with limited supervision
- Excellent command of written and spoken English and Greek
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to adapt to a multicultural/multidisciplinary research environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Master Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related field, will be an advantage
- NEBOSH or IOSH qualifications will be considered an added value
- Demonstrated ability to work with CAD programs (AutoCAD, Revit)
