The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a Post-Doctoral Fellow to pursue research at the interface between materials science modelling and scientific computing. The successful candidate will be actively engaged in ongoing research projects at the Cyprus Institute, and be part of the research team associated with the European Research Area (ERA) Chair in Modelling and Simulation for Engineering Applications (SimEA), led by Prof. Vangelis Harmandaris.

About the SimEA ERA Chair project

The SimEA project aims to consolidate and upgrade the already substantial activity CaSToRC in computational sciences by introducing a computational engineering component. This will be accomplished by attracting and installing an outstanding cluster of researchers, led by a professor of international stature to maximally utilize and upgrade the existing facilities, and pursue a program of research excellence and innovation. The SimEA ERA Chair is funded by a prestigious EU ERA Chair award of 2.5 Million Euro, a five-year grant.

Position Description

The SimEA Post-Doctoral Fellow will pursue research in Computational Science and Engineering with emphasis on multi-scale modelling, simulations and application of data analytics approaches for the study of complex nanostructured materials. The selected applicant will be integrated in the team managed by the ERA Chair and will be actively engaged in on-going research at CaSToRC associated with HPC, Data Analytics methods and the development of novel algorithms for large-scale computational infrastructures.

The appointment is for a period of 2 years, with the option of renewal subject to performance and the availability of funds. An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate. Travel funding will also be provided for attending training events and presenting at prestigious conferences globally.

Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:

The successful candidate will be engaged in one of the following research topics, according to the area of specialisation:

  1. Multi-scale computational modelling of complex nanostructured materials, such as polymer nanocomposites and star polymer electrolytes; OR
  2. Development and application of Data Analytics and Machine Learning methods for the development of atomistic and mesoscopic models for complex molecular systems.

Within either of these topics, the SimEA Post-Doctoral Fellow will be involved in the following activities:

  1. Developing algorithms and codes for simulations/data analytics in engineering applications.
  2. Performing large-scale computations in computational engineering.
  3. Analysing results and assume a leading role in the preparation of research manuscripts.
  4. Writing proposals for accessing computational resources.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • A PhD degree in Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Life Sciences, Computational Engineering or Computer Science
  • Previous experience in molecular simulations and/or data analytics methods for complex molecular systems.
  • Previous experience in at least two of the following areas: multi-scale modelling, molecular dynamics, statistical methods, data analytics, and stochastic (Monte Carlo) methods.
  • Publications in high-impact factor journals.
  • Participation in top international scientific conferences
  • Excellent knowledge of statistics and data analytics methods.
  • Excellent knowledge of programming languages such as C, C++, Fortran90, and Python.
  • An understanding of High-Performance Computing (OpenMP, OpenAcc, MPI, CUDA).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • High-level communication and strong scientific and technical writing skills;
  • Proficiency in oral and written English.
  • High level of organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills.

The successful candidate will enhance research on energy policy and planning within the activities of the Energy Department of the Centre. This field is a growing part of the Center’s portfolio and has increased its activities in the last years, in view of the needs arising from the global energy transition and the need to address national, regional and global decarbonization challenges. The Department currently serves as the major long‐term advisor of the Cypriot Government on energy and climate policy. Moreover, it expands its modelling activities in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East in the frame of the Cyprus Climate Initiative of the Republic of Cyprus, whose scientific part is led by the Cyprus Institute.

    The main research topics of this position include long‐term energy modelling and technoeconomic assessment of decarbonization technologies. The successful candidate is expected to further develop computational models for determining cost‐effective pathways to decarbonize energy systems in

    Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East region.

    In addition, the successful candidate is expected to support current policy research at CyI, but also be able to contribute to attracting research funding from national or international sources in order to initiate new research in energy policy. For this the successful candidate should have a background in engineering, with a doctoral degree related to energy policy or technoeconomic assessment of energy technologies.

    The initial period of the appointment will be for a duration of two years, with the option of renewal subject to performance and availability of funds. The annual salary for the position will be internationally competitive based on the experience level of the selected candidate. Further to the above, depending on experience the candidate will have the opportunity to assist in the supervision of doctoral students who study at the CyI’s Graduate School.

To improve our knowledge of hydrologic and ecosystems processes in a variable and changing semi-arid climate, the Division maintains a number of hydrologic, environmental and ecosystems monitoring observation stations in Cyprus. The successful candidate's main focus will be on applied field research activities related to the degradation, maintenance and construction of agricultural mountain terraces, in the framework of the REACT4MED project. The project is funded by the Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA) and involves agro-ecosystems restoration research activities in eight Mediterranean countries. The Technical Research Specialist will also support the maintenance of field and laboratory equipment and will conduct water, soil and plant observations in the field and analyses in the laboratory, in cooperation with researchers and graduate students of the Water Division.

        The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly motivated and qualified individual to join the CARE-C Centre as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Climate Change and Health using data science approaches. The role will utilise expertise and data on climate change from the Environmental Predictions Department of EMME-CARE and combine that with appropriate health data, using advanced statistical and machine learning techniques. Probabilistic/statistical inference methods will be employed to formally assess the robustness of such findings. A primary area of interest is the combination of publicly available health data at coarse temporal resolution with available national-level data at high temporal resolution using data integration techniques. More generally, the role will involve estimation of the effects of air pollution, dust and weather as well as the possible effect of the urban heat island on human health, and the associated future changes.

        The successful candidate will receive the appropriate training and guidance, while benefitting from input by expert European organisations and networking with local and regional stakeholders.

        The initial period of the appointment will be for a duration of 24 months with the possibility of renewal, depending on performance and availability of funds. An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.

         

        Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:

        1. Apply and develop statistical methods/ML for analysis of environmental and health data.
        2. Apply and develop statistical/ML methods for correcting flaws in observational data.

The successful candidate will contribute to the research objectives of the EPD, within the framework of national and/or international research projects in:

          • Atmospheric and climate/earth system modelling and analysis tools
