The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join the Institute as a Maintenance Technician in the Facilities and Infrastructure Unit. The successful candidate will be responsible for the general day-to-day handyworks, maintenance works, repairs and landscaping tasks and support with relevant administrative duties at the Institute Campuses. The Maintenance Technician will be expected to carry out tasks with the highest quality and with full adherence to health and safety standards.

The initial period of the appointment will be for a duration of 24 months with the possibility of renewal, depending on performance and availability of funds. An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.

Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:

  1. Be responsible and handle routine inspections, repairs and maintenance tasks for CyI Campuses.
  2. Repair minor mechanical and plumbing issues.
  3. Identifying, documenting, and reporting maintenance and repair works.
  4. Set up of office equipment, including setting up venues for events.
  5. Coordinate with external contractors for specialized repairs and maintenance when necessary and supervise their work.
  6. Respond to emergency maintenance requests promptly and efficiently.
  7. Technical support with any new installations as required.
  8. Participate in safety trainings and drills.
  9. Occasional landscaping and wall/equipment painting activities
  10. Performing other related duties and activities as assigned by the line manager(s).

Required Qualifications

  • School Certificate
  • Good physical condition to be able to meet the requirements of the position
  • Skilled in the use of common hand-tools
  • Experience with a variety of maintenance tasks
  • Strong time management, organizational, problem-solving skills, with the ability to be flexible and adaptable, and to change priorities and direction as needed
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Eye for detail
  • Excellent understanding and good knowledge of relevant quality and health and safety standards
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Positive attitude and good communication skills
  • Basic Microsoft Office computer skills

      The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join the Institute as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in Archaeozoology in the STARC. The successful candidate will work in the field of research is archaeozoology, ancient DNA research, and archaeology.

      The role is to conduct research to further develop a professional documentary (video) about Cyprus’ indigenous cattle breed. This will build on, publish and expand current novel and significant research results obtained at CyI as part of an A. G. Leventis Foundation-funded project (ARETI / CyZebu), in close cooperation with the Agricultural Research Institute and a professional film maker (SME). The scope of the role also includes to contribute to new grant proposal preparation.

      In general, the successful candidate is expected to:

      • Conduct research to further develop research skills and competencies, and publishing novel and significant results in selective peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
      • Contribute to all aspects of sponsored Research, Innovation and/or Development projects (including conducting research, co-authoring publications, implementing deliverables, reporting activities, dissemination activities, etc).
      • Contribute to new grant proposals preparation.

      The initial period of the appointment will be for a duration of 6 months. An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.

      • Conduct research, innovation and development activities based on project requirements.

      1. Conduct original research into the archaeology and genetic development of the Cyprus cattle
      2. Develop a scientifically sound and script appealing to the general public, in English and Greek
      3. Select through tender a professional film maker
      4. Work closely with the film maker on developing the film

       

      Required Qualifications

      1. PhD in Archaeozoology or Animal or livestock conservation or related fields
      2. Fieldwork and laboratory experience relevant for the project
      3. Excellent laboratory working experience
      4. Experience in conducting peer-reviewed research in the relevant field.
      5. Demonstrated record of publications and conference presentations.
      6. Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.

        The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly motivated and qualified faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure-track) to advance the research and teaching agenda of CyI’s Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC) in the field of Energy Systems Analysis. STeDI-RC is a cross-disciplinary endeavor to engage in policy research and innovation addressing today’s sustainability challenges. Energy and climate policy is a key priority in the Centre’s agenda, requiring rigorous techno-economic analysis through optimization and simulation methods.

        Assistant Professors, the entry level of Faculty at the Cyprus Institute, are responsible to lead and carry out research, innovation, and education activities, mentor students, and contribute to the development of the Cyprus Institute’s and their Research Centre’s scientific vision and mission in their field of expertise.

        The successful candidate is expected to carry out research and advance the state-of-the-art in energy systems analysis, primarily for use in policy decisions to achieve zero-carbon economies, at national, European and international level. For this purpose, the successful candidate is expected to collaborate closely with researchers at STeDI-RC and other CyI Centres (EEWRC and CARE-C). CyI is the main advisor of the government of Cyprus in energy, environmental and climate policy, with continuous support to public authorities on implementing and assessing policies of the European Green Deal. Therefore, in addition to groundbreaking research, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to this advisory role as well.

            The Cyprus Institute invites here applications for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join the Institute as a Post Doctoral Research Fellow for the Dust-DN project (Dust Doctoral Network) at the Environmental Observations Department of CARE-C. The successful applicant will contribute to the scientific outcomes of the project and will carry out research in the field of atmospheric dust and/or remote sensing.

            Under the Supervision of the Dust-DN Principal Investigator, the successful candidate will support the activities of the Dust Doctoral Network. The network is a strategic international, interdisciplinary and intersectoral alliance of high-profile beneficiaries and associated partners, able to leverage on unique state-of-the-art facilities. Dust-DN is the first doctoral network on a European in this field of research, and it will provide a critical mass on dust-focused studies. It involves 23 partner institutions based in 9 countries, and it will host a number of doctoral candidates on the common theme of atmospheric dust, with focus on (1) Understanding of the fundamentals of dust microphysical properties and processes; (2) Identifying the influence of source regions on atmospheric dust properties; (3) Socio-economic impacts of dust on health, aviation and energy production; and (4) Dust in the global climate system.

            Among the responsibilities of the Post-Doctoral Fellow will be to support the principal investigator with the coordination of the network, the organisation of training events and workshops, the dissemination, exploitation and communication activities, and the reporting of the project to the European Research Executive Agency (REA).

            The successful candidate is expected to enhance the scientific expertise of the institute in terms of research in the field of atmospheric dust and/or remote sensing, related to the objectives of Dust-DN, and is expected to provide mentoring and guidance to the doctoral candidates hosted at CyI.               Under the Supervision of the Dust-DN Principal Investigator, the successful candidate will coordinate the activities of the Dust Doctoral Network. The network is a strategic international, interdisciplinary and intersectoral alliance of high-profile beneficiaries and associated partners, able to leverage on unique state-of-the-art facilities. Dust-DN is the first doctoral network on a European in this field of research, and it will provide a critical mass on dust-focused studies. It involves 23 partner institutions based in 9 countries, and it will host a number of doctoral candidates on the common theme of atmospheric dust, with focus on (1) Understanding of the fundamentals of dust microphysical properties and processes; (2) Identifying the influence of source regions on atmospheric dust properties; (3) Socio-economic impacts of dust on health, aviation and energy production; and (4) Dust in the global climate system. Among the responsibilities of the Associate Research Scientist will be the coordination of the network together with the principal investigator, the organisation of training events and workshops, the dissemination, exploitation and communication activities, and the reporting of the project to the European Research Executive Agency (REA).

              The Associate Research Scientist is expected to bring their scientific expertise to the institute in terms of research in the field of atmospheric dust and/or remote sensing, related to the objectives of Dust-DN, and will contribute to the co-supervision of the doctoral candidates hosted at CyI. In this respect, the candidates should submit their vision, together with the application.

              The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to engage in teaching activities within the Master’s and PhD programs of the CyI, and/or within the Dust-DN training events. The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC) of the Cyprus Institute is the National Competence Centre for HPC, and as part of EuroCC2, aims to promote advanced technologies in Cyprus, with a focus on HPC, HPDA, machine learning, artificial intelligence and computational modeling/simulation. The main aims for EuroCC2 in Cyprus include strengthening these technical competencies of the island, advancing competitiveness in research and innovation, improving the effectiveness of government services and promoting innovation by engaging with industry.                 Position Description

                The EuroCC2 Associate Research Scientist will be working in support projects that mostly involve HPC, HPDA, ML and/or combinatorial scientific computing, in a wide range of applications (bioinformatics, medical imaging, health data analytics, etc). The main goal of these projects will be to enable academic, public and private organizations in Cyprus to develop their HPC, HPDA, applied data science, and computational modelling skills and to benefit from the growing potential of these technologies. The selected candidate will be working closely with CyI faculty, research staff, the research engineering team, as well as with external organizations towards achieving this goal.                     More specifically, the successful candidate will contribute in research and development activities of the Agora 3.0 critical infrastructure project, in collaboration with the German Oncology Centre and several other research and industry partners in Cyprus. The project aims to establish a clinical trial unit at the German Oncology Centre, which will produce high quality medical imaging data from prostate cancer patients. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will work closely with the GOC and a research team from the University of Cyprus to develop AI methods that will utilize medical imaging data to estimate the Gleason score and tumor stiffness through medical imaging.

                    The initial appointment is for a fixed-term period of 2 years with the possibility of renewal subject to performance and the availability of funds.  An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.

                     

                    Project specific responsibilities:

                    1. Perform thorough literature review of the current trends and advancements in the use of AI in the medical imaging field and prostate cancer research.
                    2. Develop multimodal AI models which utilize high quality medical imaging and medical parameters data produced at the German Oncology Centre from prostate cancer patients to estimate Gleason score and tumour stiffness.

                    Required Qualifications

                    • PhD in Computer Science, Electrical / Computer / Computational Engineering, Physical Sciences or in a relevant field.
                    • Relevant publications in scientific journals or peer-reviewed conferences.
                    • Participation in scientific conferences.
                    • Knowledge of AI frameworks (eg. PyTorch)
                    • Programming Skills: Proficiency in programming languages, such as Python, commonly used in scientific computing and machine learning.
                    • Image Analysis Knowledge: Solid understanding of image processing and analysis techniques, including challenges specific to different types of imaging data.
                    • Experience in deep learning methodologies applied in imaging data and computer vision.
                    • Experience in conducting peer-reviewed research in the relevant field.
                    • Demonstrated record of publications and conference presentations.
                    • Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
                    • Proficiency in English (written and verbal).
                    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

This project is a cooperation between research groups and innovators from Austria, Cyprus, England, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden and Tunisia. This project aims to develop an integrated approach for the mapping and analysis of land degradation status, drivers, impacts and responses. Data from field surveys, online spatial databases, remote sensing and modelling will be used to develop GIS Apps for the analysis of land management practices and climate scenarios for combatting desertification in pilot areas in Cyprus, Romania, Spain and Tunisia.

                      The initial period of the appointment will be for a duration of 24 months. Post-Doctoral Fellowships can be renewed depending to performance and availability of funds for a fixed-term period.
