Our Recruitment Principles

The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit science and technology-oriented research and educational institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The Institute’s research agenda is pursued at its five research centers: the Energy Environment Water Research Center (EEWRC), the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Center (STARC), the Climate and Atmosphere Research Center (CARE-C), and the Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Center (STeDI-RC). Considerable cross-center interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s culture.

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for highly qualified and motivated individuals to join the Institute as Associate Research Scientist at EEWRC. The successful candidates will carry out research as a member of the Sustainable Built Environment (SBE) Group within the European Horizon 2020 COLLECTiEF Project, the MSCA MuSIC Doctoral Network, and the Horizon Europe INITIATE Project.

The successful candidate should have a background in Science or Engineering and their research agenda is expected to focus on the development of intelligent tools (such as data driven and model-based solutions) for optimal management of energy systems in buildings enabled by interoperable monitoring and adaptive control algorithms, which consider energy use, occupant wellbeing and integration of renewable energy sources, for the decarbonisation of the building sector in alignment with European priorities towards the Green transition.

The successful candidate is also expected to be involved in the preparation of project proposals and in the dissemination of research outcomes through scientific and technical articles.

The period of the appointment will be for a duration of 30 months, with the possibility of renewal, depending on performance and availability of funds. An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.

 

Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:

  1. Carry out research activities in high-performance and grid-interactive buildings and smart building technologies.
  2. Develop, test, evaluate, and implement new adaptive control algorithms.
  3. Develop experimental designs with monitoring and control capabilities of technical building systems and components.
  4. Contribute to producing scientific publications.
  5. Contribute to develop project deliverables and participation in project meetings.
  6. Presentations in scientific conferences and participation in outreach events.
  1. Contribution to proposal writing.

Required Qualifications

  1. Doctoral Degree in a relevant field of Science or Engineering, such as Mechanical, Electrical, and Building Engineering or Physics.
  2. Proven research and publication track record on control theory and building energy simulation.
  3. Experience in designing, developing and deploying monitoring and adaptive control strategies in buildings.
  4. Experience in presenting research results at workshops and conferences.
  5. Track record in contributing to National and European projects.
  6. Experience in preparing Deliverables, technical reports and presentations, e.g., for the purposes of reporting results to funding agencies.
  7. Experience in preparing proposals for national and European Calls.
  8. Proven knowledge of Python programming language.
  9. Proven practical experience with the energy simulation engine EnergyPlus.
  10. At least 2 years post-doctoral experience.
  11. Excellent knowledge of the English language, both verbal and writing.
  12. Demonstrated development ability, outstanding organizational, analytical, problem solving and communication skills.
  13. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to adapt to a multicultural/multinational environment.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent knowledge of the Greek language, both verbal and writing will be an advantage.
