The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated professional to join the Institute’s STARC Centre on a full-time basis or part-time basis for its premises at Athalassa’s Campus.
The successful candidate will work closely with the inaugural ERA Chair and the PI to develop the organisational structure of the archaeological science research group, and to identify national and international research and other funding opportunities specific for archaeological science. They will also coordinate the activities of the ERA Chair project ‘One Archaeological Science in the BEMME Region’, including hiring staff, organising training and outreach activities, managing project funds, and offering grant writing support as needed, in close communication with CyI operational staff. In addition, they will focus on the development of cross-sectoral stakeholder relations, actively linking the ERA Chair to government agencies, SMEs and NGOs, promoting joint activities with and organizing training for these stakeholders, and support the ERA Chair in establishing programs that will allow better interaction with SMEs such as providing instrumental analytical resources and associated knowhow as well as administrative and IP Rights (IPR) support for archaeological applications.
Activities will also include pursuing innovation through local and regional partnerships, IP management, enhancement of contacts with stakeholders, identification of collaboration opportunities, connecting research outcomes to possible exploitation, as well as raise awareness in society for the importance of archaeology and cultural heritage to modern society. Technology transfer will be achieved through research contracts and collaboration with stakeholders in joint projects.
Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:
- Coordinate the activities of the ERA Chair project, as described in the GA
- Support the PI and inaugural ERA Chair in the implementation of the first phase of the project
- Build and manage the inter-sectoral stakeholder community
- Build and maintain the archaeological science-specific funding data base
Position Specific Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Humanities, Education, Sciences or any other relevant field for the project
- 3 years of relevant experience, preferably in an academic or research institution.
Position Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in grant acquisition and management (national and international)
- International stakeholder management experience
- Good knowledge of the local stakeholder environment relevant for the project
- Additional European language skills are desirable

The successful should have a strong background in software engineering, focusing on the design and operation of an Energy Management System (EMS) at the state-of-the-art PROTEAS facility. In this role, the successful applicant will develop, optimize, operate, and maintain an EMS that contribute to the efficient management of renewable energy resources, helping drive the transition toward sustainable energy systems. The successful candidate will preferably be able to work with a software environment designed for instrument connectivity and control such as NI LabVIEW. They should also be responsible for supporting, organizing and performing technical activities related with projects that will be performed at the PROTEAS Facility.
PROTEAS is located in Pentakomo’s coastal area, is devoted to research, development and testing of Renewable Energy Sources with emphasis on Concentrating Solar Thermal (CST), Thermal Energy Storage (TES) and thermal Desalination of Sea Water (DSW) for bridging the gap between fundamental research and industrial needs. PROTEAS is a multi-purpose facility built around a central hub of molten salt Thermal Energy Storage (TES), hybridised with batteries and other forms of storage. The facility is capable of poly-generation of heat and electricity using renewable energy technologies (CST, Wind, PV) and integration of these energy technologies with the TES, batteries, and seasonal water storage. Optimal solar radiation and environmental conditions are monitored via a state-of-the-art BSRN station.
The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to work with advanced infrastructure that supports cutting-edge projects in energy poly-generation, including thermal energy storage and other renewable energy applications. The work will involve extensive test runs of software developed, aligned with simulations and modelling results generated from scientists at PROTEAS, ensuring seamless integration of renewable technologies and storage into EMS designs. The facility is uniquely positioned to support both fundamental research and practical solutions for industry, giving you a well-rounded experience in both academic and applied research.

The successful candidate will contribute to the ARIADNE (AbsoRbIng Aerosols in the Eastern MeDiterraNEan) project recently selected for funding by the Cyprus Research & Innovation Foundation (RIF) under its “Excellence” call.
The selected candidate will be supporting the implementation of the RIF “ARIADNE” project dedicated to the experimental characterization of the chemical composition and sources of the absorbing component of Particulate Matter (PM) using a large suite of off-line (filter-based) and on-line scientific instrumentation.
The successful candidate must have a background in atmospheric sciences, with demonstrated experience in experimental research and more specifically on the characterization of aerosol properties. This is a prerequisite for the rapid engagement of the Post-doc fellow in the research project which requires immediate knowledge and experience on PM chemical analyses and PM source apportionment.
Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:
- Perform specific PM chemical data processing (QA/QC, PM source apportionment) using a large suite digital tools (e.g. US-EPA PMF, PSCF, NWR, ZEFIR, FLEXPART)
- Prepare regular reports (deliverables) gathering the results of the above processed data as a base of further scientific exploitation and interpretation (communication, publication)
- Support the field deployment and operation and the data exploitation of on-line scientific instruments dedicated to the real-time characterization of the PM chemical, physical, and optical properties in Cyprus and abroad.
Position Specific Required Qualifications:
- PhD in Atmospheric Sciences, Environmental Sciences or related field
- Research experience in experimental aerosol characterization
- A good track record (as first author) of publications in scientific journals or peer-reviewed conferences on experimental aerosol properties
- Demonstrated experience in PM source apportionment (e.g. using PMF digital tools)
- Experience in conducting autonomously PM (filter) sampling and PM chemical analyses (including sample preparation).
- Experience in postprocessing scripting and large data tools such as R, Python, Matlab or others.
- Interdisciplinary and internationally collaborative research orientation.
- Understanding of physical and mathematical concepts.
- Willingness to travel and spend time in partner organizations

- Perform specific PM chemical data processing (QA/QC, PM source apportionment) using a large suite digital tools (e.g. US-EPA PMF, PSCF, NWR, ZEFIR, FLEXPART)
- Prepare regular reports (deliverables) gathering the results of the above processed data as a base of further scientific exploitation and interpretation (communication, publication)
- Support the field deployment and operation and the data exploitation of on-line scientific instruments dedicated to the real-time characterization of the PM chemical, physical, and optical properties in Cyprus and abroad.

- PhD in Atmospheric Sciences, Environmental Sciences or related field
- Research experience in experimental aerosol characterization
- A good track record (as first author) of publications in scientific journals or peer-reviewed conferences on experimental aerosol properties

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the research projects of the Water Department, with a special focus on the newly funded Horizon Europe TERRASAFE Project on "Terrestrial resilience and restoration strategies for (semi) arid and fragile ecosystems through a multi-actor approach". This project is a cooperation between research groups and innovators from Austria, Cyprus, England, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden and Tunisia. This project aims to develop an integrated approach for the mapping and analysis of land degradation status, drivers, impacts and responses.
The successful candidate will process and analyse satellite and airborne imagery and other spatial datasets to understand the effect of climate and humans on the productivity and degradation of land and water resources. The candidate will lead the development of GIS Apps (Google Earth Engine). The candidate will contribute to hydro-ecological fieldwork and ground-truthing activities.

The Post-Doctoral fellow will have the opportunity to support students in their research, and also to implement their own research project at the group.

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated professional in Atmospheric Sciences to join the Institute’s Cyprus Atmospheric Observatory (CAO; https://cao.cyi.ac.cy/) of CARE-C on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Athalassas’ campus and other CAO Facilities.
CAO has been established by the Cyprus Institute in 2015 with the objective to establish long-term (multi-year) high quality atmospheric observations representative of the EMME region and better document air pollution and climate change (current levels and future trends). The CAO is currently part of ACTRIS, AERONET, WMO (GAW), TCCON and EMEP international networks and aims to integrate additional EU research infrastructure such as ICOS. This Facility is supporting a large number of CARE-C Faculty conducting research on ambient gas and aerosol science and technology. The CAO gathers the latest generation of scientific instrumentation for in-situ and remote sensing online monitoring of aerosol properties, reactive and greenhouse gases species following international standardized operating procedures.
The successful candidate will advance the CARE-C’s research and innovation agenda in its scientific focus of Atmospheric Observations area through supporting primarily (but not only) long-term GHG observations using in-situ, remote sensing, and mobile platforms. More specifically, the candidate shall be responsible for the full technical operation of ICOS-compliant and TCCON GHG measurements in Cyprus and the further development of long-term GHG observations in the EMME. Although the main focus will be on GHG, the successful candidate will also support research activities on Reactive Trace Gases and more generally contribute to the general activities of CAO.
Through their engagement in the above activities, the successfully recruited candidate will support and lead whenever it is possible; 1) the implementation of competitive research programs of CARE-C on trace gases, 2) the organization and implementation of intensive field campaigns in Cyprus and abroad on GHG, 3) specific technical / instrument developments related to long term observations, 4) support to early career research scientists (e.g. PhD candidates and Postdoc fellows) on trace gas measurements, 5) the further processing and exploitation of atmospheric data and drafting of scientific communications (publications, posters) in close collaboration with the EOD/GHG research group.
The ideal candidate will bring strong technical skill in Knowledge of and experience with scientific instrumentations for trace gas measurements, problem-solving abilities, high level of autonomy and a passion for innovation in a collaborative international research environment. They will be a member of a dynamic team composed by young talented scientists and technical experts, working in a highly attractive and international environment (English is the formal working language at the CyI). The candidate will access and benefit from large European scientific networks (e.g. ICOS, TCCON) for training and dissemination activities and get offered the opportunity to participate in a number of field campaigns within Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.

- Lead the long-term GHG monitoring activities in Cyprus (routine operation, control, calibration, data quality check, and scheduled maintenance) herewith supporting the Cyprus Atmospheric Observatory to integrate (and operate its GHG measurements under) the ICOS European Research Infrastructure and TCCON
- Lead the development of reactive/greenhouse gas instruments/sensors on mobile platforms (drone, car, ship), enhancing the operation of commercially available scientific instrumentation by applying hardware / software modifications
- Support the overall CAO long-term monitoring activities in all of its atmospheric components (in-situ/remote sensing, gases/aerosols)
- Organize and participate to international field experiments dedicated to atmospheric observations
- Participate to the scientific exploitation of atmospheric measurements in support of early career scientists (PhDs, Post-docs)

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated professional in Atmospheric Sciences to join the Institute’s Cyprus Atmospheric Observatory (CAO; https://cao.cyi.ac.cy/) of CARE-C on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Athalassas’ campus and other CAO Facilities.
CAO has been established by the Cyprus Institute in 2015 with the objective to establish long-term (multi-year) high quality atmospheric observations representative of the EMME region and better document air pollution and climate change (current levels and future trends). The CAO is currently part of ACTRIS, AERONET, WMO (GAW), TCCON and EMEP international networks and aims to integrate additional EU research infrastructure such as ICOS. This Facility is supporting a large number of CARE-C Faculty conducting research on ambient gas and aerosol science and technology. The CAO gathers the latest generation of scientific instrumentation for in-situ and remote sensing online monitoring of aerosol properties, reactive and greenhouse gases species following international standardized operating procedures.
The successful candidate will advance the CARE-C’s research and innovation agenda in its scientific focus of Atmospheric Observations area through supporting primarily (but not only) long-term GHG observations using in-situ, remote sensing, and mobile platforms. More specifically, the candidate shall be responsible for the full technical operation of ICOS-compliant and TCCON GHG measurements in Cyprus and the further development of long-term GHG observations in the EMME. Although the main focus will be on GHG, the successful candidate will also support research activities on Reactive Trace Gases and more generally contribute to the general activities of CAO.
Through their engagement in the above activities, the successfully recruited candidate will support and lead whenever it is possible; 1) the implementation of competitive research programs of CARE-C on trace gases, 2) the organization and implementation of intensive field campaigns in Cyprus and abroad on GHG, 3) specific technical / instrument developments related to long term observations, 4) support to early career research scientists (e.g. PhD candidates and Postdoc fellows) on trace gas measurements, 5) the further processing and exploitation of atmospheric data and drafting of scientific communications (publications, posters) in close collaboration with the EOD/GHG research group.
The ideal candidate will bring strong technical skill in Knowledge of and experience with scientific instrumentations for trace gas measurements, problem-solving abilities, high level of autonomy and a passion for innovation in a collaborative international research environment. They will be a member of a dynamic team composed by young talented scientists and technical experts, working in a highly attractive and international environment (English is the formal working language at the CyI). The candidate will access and benefit from large European scientific networks (e.g. ICOS, TCCON) for training and dissemination activities and get offered the opportunity to participate in a number of field campaigns within Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.
Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:
- Lead the long-term GHG monitoring activities in Cyprus (routine operation, control, calibration, data quality check, and scheduled maintenance) herewith supporting the Cyprus Atmospheric Observatory to integrate (and operate its GHG measurements under) the ICOS European Research Infrastructure and TCCON
- Lead the development of reactive/greenhouse gas instruments/sensors on mobile platforms (drone, car, ship), enhancing the operation of commercially available scientific instrumentation by applying hardware / software modifications
- Support the overall CAO long-term monitoring activities in all of its atmospheric components (in-situ/remote sensing, gases/aerosols)
- Organize and participate to international field experiments dedicated to atmospheric observations
- Participate to the scientific exploitation of atmospheric measurements in support of early career scientists (PhDs, Post-docs)
Position Specific Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor Degree or equivalent Engineering degree in Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Systems/Processes in Instrumentation, or related field (add text here, hit return for new item)
- Co-authoring peer-review scientific communications related to GHG observations
- Valid driving license
- At least 3 years’ experience in atmospheric GHG measurements

This Digital Scientific Applications Team in Cultural Heritage operates under the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC) in collaboration with the CyI High-Performance Computing Facility, the European Digital Innovation Hub in Cyprus (DiGiNN) and other ICT teams of the Cyprus Institute. The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join the Institute as an Information Technology Specialist. The successful candidate will have a supporting role to provide general IT support and contribute to developing suitable IT solutions to deliver a professional high-quality service level within the Institute.
The rank of the position will depend on the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience. Applications for Junior/Starting positions are also accepted with a school certificate as a minimum qualification. The initial period of the appointment will be for a duration of 24 months with the possibility of renewal, depending on performance and availability of funds. Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:
- Responsible to execute departmental administrative daily activities including the following:
- Maintenance and update of records
- Preparation and carrying out correspondence
- Handling documentation
- Makes suggestions for relevant policy/procedure improvements
- Maintains an in-depth understanding of rules and regulations, relevant laws and guidelines that apply to the position
- Configures, customizes, manages and monitors Infrastructure Systems in the following areas:
- Windows Microsoft AD (DNS, DHCP, Group Policies, Radius, etc)
- VMware vSphere
- Microsoft 365 Products
- Linux Servers
- Security Systems (Antivirus, Email Filtering, SSL, Vulnerability Assessment Tools, etc)
- Network Equipment (Switches, Routers, Firewalls), will be an advantage
- Audio Visual Equipment, will be an advantage
- Regularly monitors and oversees the performance of servers, including software and hardware, to ensure they are operating at an optimum level
- Installs and configures computer hardware operating systems and applications
- Diagnoses and troubleshoots technical issues
- Provides support with escalated help desk requests
- Provide Audio-Visual support to various events organized by the Institute
- Consults with users, management, vendors, and technicians to assess computing needs and information system requirements, suggests solutions and specifies the technology suited to meet those needs
- Evaluates project deliverables and prepares progress reports for the Institute’s IT projects
- Supports and provides training to the Institute personnel on the use of applications and prepare user manuals as necessary
- Contributes to the development of relevant IT policies and procedures to be followed by staff members
- Produces and updates IT documentation
- Performs related duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- Basic Academic qualifications (School Certificate, Diploma) – for Assistant Rank
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technologies or other directly related field.
- Experience in managing Linux Servers and Windows Servers (AD, GPO, DNS, DHCP, etc.)
- Administration experience in VMWare.
- Working knowledge of overall IT infrastructure and related technologies and standards
- Experience in administering Office 365
- Excellent knowledge of the English language both verbally and in writing
- Demonstrated development ability, outstanding organizational, analytical, problem solving and communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to adopt to a multicultural/multinational environment
- Ability to multitask and changing priorities in a high-pressure work environment
- Attention to detail
- Customer service-oriented approach
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering or other related field, will be an advantage

- Liaises with relevant Governmental and non-Governmental departments and authorities for matters relevant to the position
- Helps to develop effective H&S policies and procedures
- Ensures the Institute meets its statutory obligations in all areas pertaining to health, safety and welfare at work, including statutory training and reporting
- Ensures the completion and regular review of risk assessments for all lab activities, field works, as well as for the operation of equipment
- Ensures that all accidents or near-misses are documented, investigated and recommended improvements are implemented
- Ensures that safety inspections are carried out, fire drills and fire alarms are correctly reported, safety inspections, risk assessments and lone working procedures are managed and employees are aware of their responsibilities
- Prepares recommendations for prevention and protection measures
- Supports Health and Safety inspections in CyI premises
- Supports with the organization and implementation of relevant inductions and trainings
- Ensures full and accurate health and safety and training records are maintained
- Instructs staff in the proper use of equipment and conducts routine tests
- Counsels’ individuals on any personal or domestic problems affecting their work
- Promotes and maintains safety in the workplace
- Performs related duties and assigned
Required Qualifications
- Basic Academic qualifications (School Certificate, Diploma) – for Assistant Rank
- Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a similar field, such as engineering or architecture or related field – for Officer Rank
- Training with a total duration of 130 hours as required by the Department of Labour Inspection for the approval of a Safety Officer (this is mandatory unless the candidate holds an academic degree in H&S (Bachelor or Master))
- Demonstrate knowledge of ISO standards 9001, 14001 and 45001
- Excellent knowledge of the English and Greek languages both verbally and in writing
- Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Demonstrated development ability, outstanding organizational, analytical, problem solving and communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to adopt to a multicultural/multinational environment
- Ability to multitask and changing priorities in a high-pressure work environment
