The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit Science and Technology oriented Educational and Research Institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres: The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC), the Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC), the Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C), and the Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC). Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s culture.

The CARE-C Centre of excellence of the CyI invites here applications for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join the Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory (USRL) team (http://usrl.cyi.ac.cy) as a Software Developer.

USRL is operates various sizes of fixed and rotary wing Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs), a mobile Ground Control Station, and a fully equipped laboratories and workshops dedicated to the fabrication of Unmanned Systems and their Applications. The USRL team is seeking for an experienced Software Developer who will be responsible for the improvement of current UAS in terms of automation and user-interface friendliness as well as contributing to the development of new UAS for customized applications.

The successful candidate will be more specifically part of the Research and Development Team of the USRL under the supervision of CARE-C Director.

This position is supported by the EU H2020 project “EMME-CARE” (Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre; TEAMING Grant no. 856612), within which the Cyprus Institute established the “Centre of Excellence” in Climate and Atmosphere research for the EMME region (CARE-C) in cooperation with EU Advanced Partners (Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Germany; University of Helsinki in Finland; and CEA in France).

The initial period of the appointment will be for a duration of 24 months with the possibility of renewal, depending on performance and availability of funds. An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.

 

Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:

  • Design and development of software related to UAS.
  • Programming of UAS hardware such as flight controllers, data acquisition systems, telecommunication systems.
  • Understanding existing code, providing improvements/extending functionality of flight controllers and related hardware modules/applications.
  • Code development for Interfacing payload and avionics (communication, data handling).
  • Programming development for improving automation and safety of flights.
  • Development of user-interfaces to support mission-specific capabilities.
  • Rewriting prototype systems to more commercialized and user-friendly solutions.
  • Contributing to the overall development of the UAS (Platform and Ground Control Station).
  • Participation in scheduled Test Flights for the purpose of the development and optimization of the platforms and the avionic/navigation systems.
  • Supporting troubleshooting and diagnosis of UAS components.
  • Participates in field deployment (including research campaigns national or international) and demonstrations of UAS.
  • Remains current on UAS software and associated technology and makes appropriate recommendations to the team leader.
  • Ensures compliance with service guidance, Institute’s policy and procedures and Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) regulations.

 

Required Qualifications

  1. Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering or related field
  2. 1-years relevant experience
  3. C++, Java Programming Skills
  4. Hardware programming and low-level interface
  5. Experience in Arduino programming.
  6. Experience with Raspberry Pi.
  7. Excellent knowledge of the English language, both verbal and writing
  8. Demonstrated development ability, outstanding organizational, analytical, problem solving and communication skills
  9. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to adapt to a multicultural/multinational environment

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in UAV Flight operations
  • To have a good understanding of Object-Oriented programming.
  • Knowledge of Linux (UNIX) operating system.
  • Basic understanding of analog and digital electronic circuits
  • Experience in UAS
  • Fixed-wing/ multicopter piloting skills
