Our Recruitment Principles

The Recruitment process for new members at all levels and categories of staff reflects the values of the Institute. It has to be consistent with the following principles:

The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit, Science- and Technology-oriented Educational and Research Institution, based in Cyprus and governed by an acclaimed Board of Directors. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres, namely:

  1. The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC)
  2. The Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC)
  3. The Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC)
  4. The Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C)
  5. The Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC)

 

Considerable, cross-centre, interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s scientific ethos.

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated Reasearcher to join the Institute’s CaSToRC Centre on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Athalassa’s Campus.

The successful candidates should ideally have a background in Quantum Computing, or in Quantum Information, Lattice Gauge Theories, Quantum Gravity, Quantum Foundations, Quantum Many Body Systems, Quantum Thermodynamics and other related disciplines. The successful candidates will contribute to the research activities of the EU-funded ERA Chair QUEST project (QUantum computing for Excellence in Science and Technology), under the leadership of the ERA chairholder Karl Jansen. The world class multidisciplinary environment at CyI will also offer opportunities to the successful candidate to participate in multidisciplinary projects.

Depending on the interests and expertise of the candidates, the successful candidates will be expected to work on applications in fundamental physics, such as models in lattice gauge theories, quantum gravity, high energy and condensed matter physics.  A significant degree of research independence and initiative is expected of the successful candidate.  

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

  1. Quantum computing for models in lattice gauge theories, quantum gravity and condensed matter physics
  2. Basic research at the interface of Quantum Information, Quantum Foundations, Quantum Gravity and Quantum field theory
  3. Background independent models of computation 
  4. Quantum computing algorithms, in particular in variational quantum algorithms and/or quantum machine learning
  5. Applications to optimization problems and benchmarking of quantum computing hardware 

Position Specific Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Quantum Information, Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics or any relevant subject
  • Good knowledge of quantum information theory, quantum foundations, quantum computing algorithms or simulations could be considered as an advantage

Position Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of programming languages, such as C, C++, Julia or Python
  • Knowledge of Qiskit, Pennylane or similar programming languages

Duration of appointment:

The initial period of the appointment will be for a duration of 24 months with the possibility of renewal, depending on performance and availability of funds.

 

Remuneration details:

Salary Band: CYI4(1-9)

Position’s Starting Salary: CYI4.1 - €37641.89, CYI4.2 - €39457.60, CYI4.3 - €41273.31, CYI4.4 - €43089.02
