The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit, Science- and Technology-oriented Educational and Research Institution, based in Cyprus and governed by an acclaimed Board of Directors. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres, namely:

  1. The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC)
  2. The Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC)
  3. The Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC)
  4. The Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C)
  5. The Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC)

Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s scientific ethos.

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated Researcher to join the Institute’s CARE-C Centre of Excellence, Environmental Observations Department (EOD) on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Athalassa’s Campus.

The selected candidate will be supporting the implementation of the RIF “ARIADNE” project dedicated to the experimental characterization of the chemical composition and sources of the absorbing component of Particulate Matter (PM) using a large suite of off-line (filter-based) and on-line scientific instrumentation.

The successful candidate must have a background in atmospheric sciences, with demonstrated experience in experimental research and more specifically on the characterization of aerosol properties.  This is a prerequisite for the rapid engagement of the Post-doc fellow in the research project which requires immediate knowledge and experience on PM chemical analyses and PM source apportionment.

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

  1. Perform specific PM chemical data processing (QA/QC, PM source apportionment) using a large suite digital tools (e.g. US-EPA PMF, PSCF, NWR, ZEFIR, FLEXPART)
  2. Prepare regular reports (deliverables) gathering the results of the above processed data as a base of further scientific exploitation and interpretation (communication, publication)
  3. Support the field deployment and operation and the data exploitation of on-line scientific instruments dedicated to the real-time characterization of the PM chemical, physical, and optical properties in Cyprus and abroad.

Position Specific Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Atmospheric Sciences, Environmental Sciences or related field
  • Research experience in experimental aerosol characterization
  • A good track record (as first author) of publications in scientific journals or peer-reviewed conferences on experimental aerosol properties
  • Demonstrated experience in PM source apportionment (e.g. using PMF digital tools)
  • Experience in conducting autonomously PM (filter) sampling and PM chemical analyses (including sample preparation).
  • Experience in postprocessing scripting and large data tools such as R, Python, Matlab or others.
