Application process open *

The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit, Science- and Technology-oriented Educational and Research Institution, based in Cyprus and governed by an acclaimed Board of Directors. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres, namely:

  1. The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC)
  2. The Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC)
  3. The Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC)
  4. The Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C)
  5. The Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC)

Considerable, cross-centre, interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s scientific ethos.

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated Engineer to join the Institute’s PROTEAS Facility of EEWRC Centre on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Pentakomo.

The successful should have a strong background in software engineering, focusing on the design and operation of an Energy Management System (EMS) at the state-of-the-art PROTEAS facility. In this role, the successful applicant will develop, optimize, operate, and maintain an EMS that contribute to the efficient management of renewable energy resources, helping drive the transition toward sustainable energy systems. The successful candidate will preferably be able to work with a software environment designed for instrument connectivity and control such as NI LabVIEW. They should also be responsible for supporting, organizing and performing technical activities related with projects that will be performed at the PROTEAS Facility.

PROTEAS is located in Pentakomo’s coastal area, is devoted to research, development and testing of Renewable Energy Sources with emphasis on Concentrating Solar Thermal (CST), Thermal Energy Storage (TES) and thermal Desalination of Sea Water (DSW) for bridging the gap between fundamental research and industrial needs. PROTEAS is a multi-purpose facility built around a central hub of molten salt Thermal Energy Storage (TES), hybridised with batteries and other forms of storage. The facility is capable of poly-generation of heat and electricity using renewable energy technologies (CST, Wind, PV) and integration of these energy technologies with the TES, batteries, and seasonal water storage. Optimal solar radiation and environmental conditions are monitored via a state-of-the-art BSRN station.

The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to work with advanced infrastructure that supports cutting-edge projects in energy poly-generation, including thermal energy storage and other renewable energy applications. The work will involve extensive test runs of software developed, aligned with simulations and modelling results generated from scientists at PROTEAS, ensuring seamless integration of renewable technologies and storage into EMS designs. The facility is uniquely positioned to support both fundamental research and practical solutions for industry, giving you a well-rounded experience in both academic and applied research.

This role is designed for someone eager to work at the forefront of energy research in a dynamic, collaborative environment.
