Our Recruitment Principles

The Recruitment process for new members at all levels and categories of staff reflects the values of the Institute. It has to be consistent with the following principles:

The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit, Science- and Technology-oriented Educational and Research Institution, based in Cyprus and governed by an acclaimed Board of Directors. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres, namely:

1.       The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC)

2.       The Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC)

3.       The Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC)

4.       The Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C)  

5.       The Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC)

 

Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s scientific ethos.

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a new faculty member at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor in the broader area of computational science and technology, to join the Institute’s CaSToRC Centre on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Athalassa’s Campus.

The selected faculty applicant will enhance the competencies of the Institute in one or more of the following research areas:

(i)                  Combinatorial Scientific Computing (with AI-driven methods),

(ii)                Robust AI and Uncertainty Quantification (for ML models),

(iii)               Large-Scale Optimization (leveraging AI and ML techniques), and

(iv)               Digital Twins (utilizing ML approaches for simulation, optimization, and real-time integration of digital twins in complex systems).

Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in AI and ML methodologies complemented with experience in the utilization of advanced computing technologies such as HPC and/or cloud computing. Priority in consideration for hiring will be given to the highest rank where qualified applicants are identified.

The selected applicant will implement and advance the research agenda of the Institute in general and of CaSToRC in particular in close collaboration with faculty, research staff and the leadership of CyI. As a faculty member, an aptitude and/or experience in mentoring and teaching Doctoral and Master’s students is necessary. The successful candidate will be expected to actively contribute to the Institute’s graduate program. The candidate will work in Cyprus and will be offered a tenure-track position, an attractive salary, and benefits package depending on the level of experience.

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

The new faculty member will contribute in shaping the Institute’s research agenda by:

1.       Developing and implementing strategies appropriate to the Institute’s mission;

2.       Mentoring, educating and providing research guidance to graduate students;

3.       Developing and expanding the Institute’s research, innovation and educational activities;

4.       Developing a world-class research program in one or more of the following areas: (i) Combinatorial Scientific Computing (with AI-driven methods), (ii) Robust AI and Uncertainty Quantification (for ML models), (iii) Large-Scale Optimization (leveraging AI and ML techniques), and (iv) Digital Twins (utilizing ML approaches for simulation, optimization, and real-time integration of digital twins in complex systems);

5.       Assisting in building a transdisciplinary research environment and collaborations with other research areas where the aforementioned fields are applicable;

6.       Securing financial and other resources from national and international sources;

7.       Initiating and sustaining high-level collaborative projects with leading research institutions that conduct research in areas related to his/her respective fields;

8.       Contributing to the development and implementation of facilities appropriate to the research of The Cyprus Institute;

9.       Communicating the results and implications of research conducted in CaSToRC and The Institute at all levels, including academic, popular, and policy-related.

 

Position Specific Required Qualifications:

·       PhD in in Computational Sciences, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, or a closely related discipline.

·       Proven research and academic record of international standing. 

·       Experience in mentoring and teaching graduate students depending on the rank they are applying for (an absolute requirement for the Associate Professor rank).

·       Teaching and postgraduate training record, appropriate for the rank the candidate is applying for.

·       Proficiency in spoken and written English.

·       Excellent interpersonal and management skills.

 

Position Specific Desired Qualifications

·       A minimum of three years of post-doctoral research experience or equivalent in relevant fields of research is required for the rank of Assistant Professor. For the rank of Associate Professor, a minimum requirement of five years of relevant experience is required.

Duration of appointment:

The candidate will work in Cyprus and will be offered a tenured or tenure-track position.

Remuneration details:

Salary Band: For Assistant Professor CyI7.1 - CyI7.8 / For Associate Professor (CyI9.1 - CyI10.8)

Position’s Starting Salary: CyI7.1 - €55668.86 / CyI9.1 - 70648.69

Previous years of experience in the same rank offered by CyI will be considered for the first placement on the pay band. For each completed year of previous experience at the time of contract start, one pay step will be recognised on the respective pay band.
