The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit, Science- and Technology-oriented Educational and Research Institution, based in Cyprus and governed by an acclaimed Board of Directors. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres, namely:

1.      The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC)

2.      The Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC)

3.      The Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC)

4.      The Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C)  

5.      The Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC)

 

Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s scientific ethos.

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join the Institute’s PROTEAS Research Facility of the EEWRC on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Pentakomo Campus (Limassol).

The successful candidate will be responsible to carry out the operation, maintenance and development of the Monitoring and Control System at the PROTEAS Concentrated Solar Power Facility. Concurrently, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute in the on-going activities of Energy Division associated with the integration, controls, monitoring and development of database for the scientific fields of: i) Concentrated Solar Power, ii) Energy Storage, iii) Desalination, iv) Polygeneration and Hybridization, v) Microgrids portfolio of the Energy Division at CyI.

The successful candidate will be expected to design, develop and integrate Virtual Interfaces to the Main PROTEAS control system and it is expected that they will be in charge of the PROTEAS Database and Data Acquisition systems. The successful candidate will be expected to closely collaborate with the researchers on the implementation of controls / monitoring and automation strategies for specific research activities and projects.

 

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

·        Maintenance and development of the Monitoring and Control System at CyI PROTEAS Facility at Pentakomo. Selection of appropriate sensors, hardware and software tools are included.

·        Design, testing, construction and optimization of monitoring and control strategies in LabView environment.

·        Implementation and maintenance of database to store and treat scientific data.

·        Data acquisition, instrument control, test automation, signal processing and embedded system design.

·        Communication with existing and future assets at PROTEAS, as well as with IT equipment in liaison with the IT dept of CyI.

·        Provide software support in LabVIEW for the development, operation and maintenance of other laboratories of the Energy department.

·        Support with the design, specification, and integration of instrumentation and control systems for high-temperature solar thermal facilities.

·        Support the development and maintenance process control philosophies, P&IDs, functional specifications, and automation architecture.

·        Select and configure sensors, actuators, PLCs, SCADA, and other control equipment suited to harsh environments.

·        Support design and development of electrical systems for prototype and demonstration facilities.

·        Work closely with process, thermal, and mechanical engineers to figure out how to make novel equipment operate safely, reliably, and effectively.

·        Ensure design process considers safety, reliability, maintainability, operability, and cost effectiveness.

·        Take an active role in commissioning, troubleshooting, and operational support of plant systems.

 

Position Specific Required Qualifications:

       A Bachelor degree in a relevant field of science or engineering (i.e. Electrical/Electronic engineering and/or Computer engineering)

       Familiarity with LabView software

       Familiarity with software interlocks systems

   Knowledge of SCADA systems, data acquisition and industrial automation software and processes (e.g., NI LabVIEW)

 

 

Position Specific Desired Qualifications:

       A Master degree in a relevant field of science or engineering will be considered an advantage

       Previous research support experience will be considered an advantage

       2+ years’ experience in instrumentation, automation, and electrical systems design, ideally in power stations, processing plants, or other research / industrial facilities.

       Experience in commissioning and operation of control systems in mechanical, optical, steam and/or material handling processes.

       Experience integrating PLCs, SCADA,  and communication systems and protocols.

       Exposure to power station electrical systems, switchgear, and protection systems is desirable.

       Ability to bridge control, instrumentation, and general electrical engineering.

       Specialised experience in one or more of the following fields would be an asset:

ü  Instrumentation,

ü  Control systems

ü  Computational and experimental fluid-mechanics

ü  Solar-Thermal plants, Concentrating Solar Power, co-generation of concentrated solar power and desalination

ü  Thermal storage devices (e.g. molten salts), high temperature engineering

Duration of appointment:

The initial period of the appointment will be for a duration of 24 months with the possibility of renewal, depending on performance and availability of funds.

 

Remuneration details:

Salary Band: CYI3(1-14)

Position’s Starting Salary: CYI3.1 - €30323.41
