The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated individuals to join the Institute’s CaSToRC Centre as part of the Computational Physics Group on a full-time basis or part-time basis for its premises at Athalassas Campus.

The successful candidates should be physicists with interest in lattice Quantum Chromodynamics, with experience in theoretical physics, programming, and data analysis. The successful candidates will contribute to the activities of the local group, and in particular will i) work on application codes of the group, including implementing new algorithms, scaling, optimizing, and porting new methods, ii) run these codes on leadership systems such as those available via EuroHPC, and iii) perform analysis and postprocessing of the resulting data, including documenting the results in presentations and preparing manuscripts.

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

1. Carry out research activities and software development in lattice QCD applications
2. Carry out simulations and analyses as required in RIF funded projects, including the preparation material documenting the results
3. Contribute to scientific publications
4. Contribute to project deliverables and participation in project meetings
5. Presentations in scientific conferences and participation in outreach events.

The successful candidate will primarily work in the Biodiversity & Green in Mediterranean Historic Cities (B_Green) project funded by the Driving Urban Transitions Partnership (https://dutpartnership.eu/).

The successful candidate will be responsible for the support of the contribution of the Virtual Environments Lab to the project which involves the creation of a digital space for the project indicators to be applied and accessed in demonstrator historical centres. Specifically, the Virtual Environments Lab team will develop an online platform with visualisation features and a content database. The candidate will collaborate with web developers to support data collection, processing, transformation, digital tools’ development, including setting up user evaluation sessions.

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

1. Provide support in GIS modeling and data visualisation.
2. Provide support in conducting data collection and GIS analysis related to urban modelling and environmental data visualisation.
3. Assist in stakeholder engagement, participating in meetings and workshops to help in collecting stakeholders’ knowledge.
4. Assist in the development of innovation frameworks, such as living labs to connect stakeholders around a common strategy and action plan.
5. Help in preparing project reports, contributing to scientific publications.

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for highly qualified and motivated Developers to join the Unmanned System Research Laboratory (USRL) team (http://usrl.cyi.ac.cy) of the CARE-C Centre of Excellence, on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at the Nicosia Campus.

USRL is comprised of various sizes of fixed and rotary wing Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs), a mobile Ground Control Station and a fully equipped laboratory and workshop dedicated to the construction of Unmanned Systems and their Applications. After a period of research and prototyping in the field of UAS, the USRL is looking into further growth with emphasis on commercialization of its products and services. In order to assist accomplishing this new target, the team is seeking experienced Software Developers to join the highly competitive USRL team. As part of their appointment, the successful candidates will be responsible for the improvement of current UAS in terms of automation and user-interface friendliness as well as contributing to the development of new UAS for customized applications.

The successful candidates will be part of the Research and Development Team of the USRL under the supervision of CARE-C Director.

1. Design and development of software related to UAS.

The successful candidate will contribute to the ARIADNE (AbsoRbIng Aerosols in the Eastern MeDiterraNEan) project recently selected for funding by the Cyprus Research & Innovation Foundation (RIF) under its “Excellence” call.

The Research Technical Assistant will be supporting the implementation of this project dedicated to the experimental characterization of the chemical composition and sources of the absorbing component of Particulate Matter (PM) using a large suite of off-line (filter-based) and on-line scientific instrumentation. More specifically, the successful candidate will be responsible for conducting and supporting chemical analyses of particulate matter, including carbonaceous species (organic and elemental carbon) and trace (metal) elements.

This role also involves preparing and analyzing aerosol filters, performing gravimetric measurements, data management, and assisting with the implementation of quality assurance analytical protocols and interlaboratory professional testing. Collaboration with cross-disciplinary teams at CARE-C will be an integral part of the role.

1. Develop continuum simulation methodologies for degrading microplastics by numerically implementing asymptotic models and using Boundary Element Methods.
2. Perform parametric studies using the resulting code to investigate the effect of material parameters and environmental conditions.
3. Assist in model development using matched asymptotics and integral methods.

• PhD degree in Physical Sciences, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, or relevant disciplines
• Previous experience in continuum modelling and simulations.

The Education and Training Assistant will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations of the VET centre of the CyI Graduate School. Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

1. Designs and updates promotional materials for various media platforms (websites, social media etc.)
2. Contributes to the development and implements a promotion strategy to attract training participants and increase the CyI VET center’s visibility

4. Handles financials including payments, subsidies, budget tracking

The Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory (USRL; http://usrl.cyi.ac.cy), a flagship facility of the Cyprus Institute (CyI) develops and operates state-of-the-art Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) in various fields of research, including atmospheric sciences, environmental monitoring, including image-based earth observations.

Due to the increasing demand in flying operations mostly related to environmental monitoring and more specifically to preventive forest surveillance for the identification of fires at early stage, The Cyprus Institute is seeking two (2) UAS/UAV Pilots (in the rank of Technical Research Assistant) to actively contribute in flying operations as well as maintenance and further development of the UAS for various purposes. The successful candidates are also expected to contribute with the maintenance and repairs on the UAS and support scientists and engineers of the team to integrate new instruments on board the UAVs.

The successful candidates should have a background in theoretical physics with specialisation in lattice Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) simulations and analyses. A strong background in large scale, lattice QCD, multi-GPU application codes will be considered an advantage.

In particular, the candidates will i) work on application codes of the group, including implementing new functionality or porting new methods to new HPC systems, ii) running these codes on Tier-0 systems such as those available via EuroHPC, and iii) performing analysis and postprocessing of the resulting data, including documenting the results in presentations and preparing manuscripts.

The successful candidates will be engaged in the physics projects of the group, and specifically in the projects MuonHVP, DeNuTra, and PulseQCD, funded by the Research and Innovation Foundation of Cyprus, with topics which include hadron structure, muon anomalous magnetic moment, hyperons, hadron resonances, renormalization of extended operators, and large-scale simulations and machine learning approaches for lattice QCD. The group is a member of the Extended Twisted Mass Collaboration.

• Design and develop a nowcasting scheme and create robust, user-friendly software solutions tailored to our team's needs.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to implement, optimize, and document software for real-time data analysis and forecasting.

The successful candidate must have a background in software development, data analysis, algorithm design, and expertise in real-time forecasting or nowcasting systems. More specifically, the successful candidate will contribute to research and development activities of the Agora 3.0 critical infrastructure project, in collaboration with the German Medical Institute (GMI) and several other research and industry partners in Cyprus. The project aims to establish a clinical trial unit at the GMI, which will produce high quality medical imaging data from prostate cancer patients. The Research Engineer will work closely with the GMI and a research team from the University of Cyprus to develop AI methods that will utilize medical imaging data to estimate the Gleason score and tumour stiffness through medical imaging.

In this role, the successful applicant will develop, optimize, operate, and maintain an EMS that contribute to the efficient management of renewable energy resources, helping drive the transition toward sustainable energy systems. The successful candidate will preferably be able to work with a software environment designed for instrument connectivity and control such as NI LabVIEW. They should also be responsible for supporting, organizing and performing technical activities related with projects that will be performed at the PROTEAS Facility.

PROTEAS is located in Pentakomo’s coastal area, is devoted to research, development and testing of Renewable Energy Sources with emphasis on Concentrating Solar Thermal (CST), Thermal Energy Storage (TES) and thermal Desalination of Sea Water (DSW) for bridging the gap between fundamental research and industrial needs. PROTEAS is a multi-purpose facility built around a central hub of molten salt Thermal Energy Storage (TES), hybridised with batteries and other forms of storage. The facility is capable of poly-generation of heat and electricity using renewable energy technologies (CST, Wind, PV) and integration of these energy technologies with the TES, batteries, and seasonal water storage. Optimal solar radiation and environmental conditions are monitored via a state-of-the-art BSRN station.

The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to work with advanced infrastructure that supports cutting-edge projects in energy poly-generation, including thermal energy storage and other renewable energy applications. The work will involve extensive test runs of software developed, aligned with simulations and modelling results generated from scientists at PROTEAS, ensuring seamless integration of renewable technologies and storage into EMS designs. The facility is uniquely positioned to support both fundamental research and practical solutions for industry, giving you a well-rounded experience in both academic and applied research.

1. Perform specific PM chemical data processing (QA/QC, PM source apportionment) using a large suite digital tools (e.g. US-EPA PMF, PSCF, NWR, ZEFIR, FLEXPART)

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the research projects of the Water Department, with a special focus on the newly funded Horizon Europe TERRASAFE Project on "Terrestrial resilience and restoration strategies for (semi) arid and fragile ecosystems through a multi-actor approach". This project is a cooperation between research groups and innovators from Austria, Cyprus, England, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden and Tunisia. This project aims to develop an integrated approach for the mapping and analysis of land degradation status, drivers, impacts and responses.

The successful candidate will process and analyse satellite and airborne imagery and other spatial datasets to understand the effect of climate and humans on the productivity and degradation of land and water resources. The candidate will lead the development of GIS Apps (Google Earth Engine). The candidate will contribute to hydro-ecological fieldwork and ground-truthing activities.

The successful candidate is expected to be a hands-on person to start developing methods to qualify and quantify sub-pptV levels of base molecules, relevant to new particle formation. Other novel application ideas to utilize the groups’ assets are highly welcome. CARE-C offers full access to state-of-the-art instrumentation, the MION-Orbitrap, MION-APi-TOF, NAIS (*3) and PSM2.0. The Post-Doctoral fellow will have the opportunity to support students in their research, and also to implement their own research project at the group.

It is expected from the successful candidate to support the group’s vision with a hands-on attitude in the lab and to be able to analyse and interpret the data produced independently. Publishing and dissemination of the scientific work is expected. Good coordination and communication skill are a must as the group is international with several traveling in workshops and campaigns.

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

1. Experimental work using MION-orbitrap and MION-APi-TOF mass spectrometers, both in laboratory and in field experiments.
2. Development methods to qualify and quantify sub-pptV levels of base molecules, relevant to new particle formation.
3. Data analysis and interpretation of mass spectrometric and (all other EOD) data.
4. Support students in both experimental and data analysis of mass spectrometric research and in fulfilling their research questions.
5. Coordinate data flow from campaigns and long-term measurements and support archiving them
6. Dissemination of the results in peer-reviewed journals and international workshops and conferences during your appointment.

• PhD in Atmospheric sciences, Chemistry, Engineering or relevant scientific field
• Hands-on-attitude with common sense approach to experimental work
• Experience in technical aspects and data analysis of mass spectrometric data (APi-TOF, Orbitrap)

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for highly qualified and motivated Computer/Software engineers to join the Institute’s newly formed Digital Scientific Applications Team in Cultural Heritage in collaboration with the High-Performance Computing Facility, on a full-time basis basis (100% FTE) for its premises at the Nicosia Campus.

This Digital Scientific Applications Team in Cultural Heritage operates under the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC) in collaboration with the CyI High-Performance Computing Facility, the European Digital Innovation Hub in Cyprus (DiGiNN) and other ICT teams of the Cyprus Institute. It contributes to the implementation of research and innovation projects by combining their software development expertise with a good understanding of Research.

The CyI High-Performance Computing Facility (HPCF) provides advanced computing ICT services and supports the activities of CyI and its Research Centres. The HPCF is the national supercomputing facility for Cyprus and provides compute and data resources to the research and innovation community of Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean region.

The specific positions to be filled are as follows:

(a) Web Developers: Implement responsive and scalable web applications, front and back-end, primarily related to the development of knowledge repositories, implementation of ontologies, semantic structures and knowledge graphs (two positions);

(b) VR Software Engineer: Work on different aspects of VR development, such as graphics, audio, physics, user interface, networking, or performance optimization (one position);

(c) GIS Developer: Design and implement web-based geographic information systems using various programming languages, software packages, and databases (one position),

(d) Supercomputing Systems Engineer(s): System administration for advanced HPC systems, user support, resource allocation, hardware procurement, and technology evaluation (at least one position).

The successful candidates will work in an international, multi-disciplinary and pluri-cultural context and in collaboration with major European research institutes. 

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

1. Web Developers:

• Develop and implement high-quality front-end code using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, adhering to best practices and industry standards.
• Collaborate with designers to translate UI/UX designs into responsive web pages.

3. GIS Developer:

• Develop and maintain front- and back- end web GIS applications.
• Create and maintain GIS databases, geodatabases, and schemas.

4. Supercomputing Systems Engineer(s):

• System Administration

1. Junior Computer/Software Engineer: no additional experience required, however an additional year of relevant work experience will be considered an advantage
2. Mid-level Computer/Software Engineer: additional 2 years relevant work experience

1. Web Developer

• Experience as a Web Developer or a similar role.
• Experience with front-end frameworks such as React, Angular, or Vue.js.

• Proficient in QGIS, ESRI ArcGIS Server and JavaScript API.
