The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a new faculty member at the level of Assistant Professor (tenure-track), to join the Institute’s STeDI-RC Centre on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Athalassa’s Campus.

The selected candidate is expected to advance the research and teaching agenda of CyI’s Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC) in the field of Decision Support for Climate Policies.

STeDI-RC is a cross-disciplinary endeavour to engage in policy research and innovation addressing today’s sustainability challenges. Energy and climate policy is a key priority in the Centre’s agenda, requiring rigorous techno-economic assessments through various methods, including optimization, simulation, multicriteria analysis as well as stakeholder participation methods.

Assistant Professors, the entry level of Faculty at the Cyprus Institute, are responsible to lead and carry out research, innovation, and education activities, mentor students, and contribute to the development of the Cyprus Institute’s and their Research Centre’s scientific vision and mission in their field of expertise.

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities

The successful candidate is expected to carry out research and advance the state-of-the-art in decision support methods for use in policy decisions to achieve zero-carbon economies, at national, European and international level. For this purpose, the successful candidate is expected to collaborate closely with researchers at STeDI-RC and other CyI Centres (EEWRC and CARE-C). CyI is the main advisor of the government of Cyprus in energy, environmental and climate policy, with continuous support to public authorities on implementing and assessing policies of the European Green Deal. Therefore, in addition to groundbreaking research, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to this advisory role as well.

Position Specific Required Qualifications

·        PhD degree related to Decision Support methods for assessing the impacts of climate, energy and/or environmental policies.

·        Experience in the application of several research methods for decision support (e.g. optimization, simulation models, multicriteria assessments, stakeholder participation methods).

·        Experience in attracting competitive research funding in the European research and innovation landscape.

·        Experience in international research collaboration.

·        Excellent knowledge of European energy and climate policy and the international climate policy landscape.

Position’s Starting Salary: CyI7.1 - €55,723.33

Previous years of experience in the same rank offered by CyI will be considered for the first placement on the pay band. For each completed year of previous experience at the time of contract start, one pay step will be recognised on the respective pay band.

    The successful candidate will be responsible for the general day-to-day handyworks, maintenance works, repairs and landscaping tasks and support with relevant administrative duties at the Institute Campuses. The Maintenance Technician will be expected to carry out tasks with the highest quality and with full adherence to health and safety standards.

    Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:

    1.      Responsible for handling routine inspections, repairs and maintenance tasks for CyI Campuses.

    2.      Repairing minor mechanical and plumbing issues.

    3.      Identifying, documenting, and reporting maintenance and repair works.

    4.      Responsible for the set-up of office equipment, including setting up venues for events.

    5.      Coordinating with external contractors for specialized repairs and maintenance when necessary and supervising their work.

    6.      Responding to emergency maintenance requests promptly and efficiently.

    7.      Providing technical support with any new installations as required.

    8.      Participating in safety training and drills.

    9.      Occasional landscaping and wall/equipment painting activities

    10.   Performing other related duties and activities assigned by the line manager(s).

    Required Qualifications

      The successful candidate will be responsible for 3D documentation of heritage assets, including Monuments, Archaeological Sites and Artifacts, addressing issues of cultural heritage conservation, preservation and valorisation through digital technologies.

      The successful candidate will operate a variety of data capture instruments, such as laser scanners, optical scanners and photogrammetry, and related software, including 3D Gaussian splatting. The new Research Technical Scientist is expected to bring expertise in post-processing of 3D data, including shape and geometry analysis, extraction of features, 3D modelling and use of web-based 3D viewers, such as Potree, Aton, 3D HOP and similar.

      This position is funded under the DIGIARC 2 project, within the framework of the INTERREG VI-A Greece–Cyprus Programme. DIGIARC 2 project is co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and by National Funds of Greece and Cyprus.

      Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

      ·        2D and 3D documentation of Heritage sites, monuments, archaeological artifacts and works of art;

      ·        Post-processing of 3D data with a particular focus on shape and geometry analysis, extraction of features and publication of 3D data on 3D web viewers;

      ·        Contribute 3D expertise to the APAC Labs pipeline of Art Characterization;

      ·        Help in maintaining and developing the 3D instrumentation and data repository of the APAC labs (hardware and software);

      ·        Provide input to deliverables of relevant EU-funded projects, e.g. ECHOES, GRAPHIA, 3D-4CH, ATRIUM.

      Position Specific Required Qualifications:

      ·        Bachelor’s degree in related computer sciences, Architecture, Geodesic or related engineering, or Digital Cultural Heritage.

      ·        Proven record on the ability to write technical reports related to 3D documentation and analysis of heritage assets.

      ·        3D data capture software (e.g. Cyclone);

      ·        3D post-processing software (e.g. Meshlab, CloudCompare, Geomagic);

      ·        Use of 3D web-based viewers, such as Potree, Aton, 3D HOP;

      ·        Use of 3D Gaussian splatting; HBIM (including Autocad, Revit);

      ·        3D modelling software (e.g. 3D Max, Blender, Rhino);

          The successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day execution of activities of the Doctoral Networks Marie Skłodowska-Curie projects. The Senior Education and Training Officer should be an experienced professional who will execute administrative and project-related management activities with added coordination responsibility for the DN projects. They will also contribute to the management of the school’s activities related to these projects and to the implementation of relevant tasks of the Graduate School.

          The successful candidate will manage the training, reporting, operational and financial aspects of the Doctoral Networks projects in close collaboration with other institute staff.

           

          Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

          ·        Execution of Doctoral Networks projects administration and coordination activities, including financial reporting, deliverables, communication with funding organizations.

          ·        Planning and implementation of Networking and community building activities with National and International stakeholders.

          ·        Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Doctoral Networks projects and coordinate the activities of the consortia involved in the projects.

          ·        Organize the training activities and secondments of the respective PhD students, enrolled at different European universities.

          ·        Ensure that projects’ documentation is completed in accordance with the grant agreement and that the documentation is updated and properly archived.

          ·        Maintain a clear view of projects’ deliverables and timelines, ensuring coordination between partners and on-time delivery and prepare relevant reports (non-scientific).

          ·        Keeping track of the project's budget / expenditure and prepare financial reports.

          ·        Collaborate with colleagues in and outside the doctoral networks, including partners from the non-academic environment and the European Commission.

          ·        Responsible for the communication and dissemination of the specific projects, including the projects’ website and social media.

          ·        Organize and participate in research and training events, and travel in connection with projects’ meetings and training sessions.

          ·        Be responsible for identifying and attracting funding through competitive educational and training grants, search and promote funding opportunities, and assist in proposal preparation

          ·        Participate in external events, either in Cyprus or abroad, for the promotion of the Doctoral Networks projects’ activities and as required for ensuring the smooth operation of the projects.

          ·        Liaise with staff across the Institute for various matters related to the Doctoral Network projects’ operations

          Position Specific Required Qualifications:

          ·        A Master’s Degree in any scientific field.

          ·        Experience in managing EU and/or national-funded research projects.

          ·        Experience in presenting to medium and large audiences.

           

          Position Preferred Qualifications:

          ·        Previous experience in writing and/or supporting researchers in writing research proposals.

          ·        PhD degree and additional work experience will be considered a competitive advantage.

            The selected candidate will join a research team that aims to assess climate change impacts on health. 

            More specifically the successful candidate will engage with the ISMED-CLIM project, which aims to advance the state-of-the-art knowledge on the effects of climate change on non-communicable diseases and vector-borne infections through a multidisciplinary approach. The project focuses on the Mediterranean region and aims to engage and mobilize regional policy and social stakeholders, as well as citizens, in implementing mitigation solutions. ISMED-CLIM aims to investigate the epidemiology of exposure to air pollution, vector-borne pathogens, and climate change-related extreme events, such as extreme temperatures, droughts, floods, and wildfires, in the Mediterranean region.

            The selected candidate is expected to support current research at the CyI on the health consequences associated with non-communicable diseases and climate change scenarios. For this, the ability to perform impact assessment through statistical, numerical and epidemiological modelling and data analysis, as well as producing high-quality research output, are essential.  

             

            Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

            ·        Perform internationally competitive scientific research on statistical modelling for quantifying extreme weather and pollution effects on human health.

            ·        Contribute to the assessment of climate impacts on health, climate risk and vulnerability review, policy landscape and recommendations.

            Position Specific Required Qualifications:

            ·        PhD in Natural or Mathematical Sciences, or Environmental Science/Engineering, Epidemiology, Public Health, or a relevant subject.

              The successful candidate will provide technical, analytical, and research support for archaeobotanical projects, focusing on the recovery, identification, analysis, and interpretation of plant remains from archaeological sites in Cyprus and EMME region.

              The role requires hands-on expertise in archaeobotanical methodologies, laboratory management, and data processing, as well as collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.

              The research technical scientist will also use laboratory equipment such as SEM, instrumentation  for extraction of starches and phytolith and will be responsible for preparation of samples for isotopic analysis.

              Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

              ·       Manage archaeobotanical samples (flotation, wet-sieving, sorting, microscopic identification) and curate reference collections; 

              ·       Ensure quality control, update lab protocols, and oversee equipment and sample archiving; 

              ·       Conduct identification and analysis of macro- and micro-botanical remains to study past agriculture, diet, trade, and environment;

              ·       Contribute to the preparation of research publications, reports, and presentations;

                The Cyprus Institute invites applications for highly motivated professionals to apply for 3 positions of Research Technical Scientist-Computer/Software Engineer (Junior or Senior Positions according to the candidate's qualifications and experience) on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at the Nicosia Campus.

                These roles will support the joint operation of the HPCF and DiGiNN, engage in a diverse matrix of activities across a unified value chain, manage access to the latest hardware, including NVIDIA B200 and RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell nodes. The candidates will get involved in diverse areas ranging from supporting "standard" users adopting state-of-the-art open-weights models to assisting high-level research units in complex, research-driven engineering. They will also act as the technical engine for DiGiNN’s "Test Before Invest" services, directly impacting the digital maturity of Cyprus. Moreover, they will orchestrate and deliver technical training, contributing to the national upskilling mandate.

                The European Digital Innovation Hub in Cyprus, DiGiNN, is a strategic consortium acting as a national "one-stop-shop" to accelerate the digital transformation of Cypriot SMEs and the public sector. Co-funded by the EU and the Cypriot government, it provides a set of free services ranging from ‘testing before invest’ services (AI, HPC, Cybersecurity) and digital skills training to investment support and ecosystem networking.

                The CyI High-Performance Computing Facility (HPCF) provides advanced computing ICT services and supports the activities of CyI and its Research Centres. The HPCF is the national supercomputing facility for Cyprus and provides compute and data resources to the research and innovation community of Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean region.

                Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

                (a) MLOPs Engineer (Junior, Mid-level, Senior - depending on experience, level of responsibility and autonomy)

                ·        End-to-end delivery and technical integrity of all AI and data-driven services

                ·        Integrate functional AI prototypes (TRL 6) into working, scalable pilot systems on the HPCF's AI infrastructure

                ·        Build automated MLOps pipelines to manage Continuous Integration (CI) of code and Continuous Deployment (CD) of model artifacts

                ·        Execute and manage standard fine-tuning or training jobs on NVIDIA B200/RTX nodes using pre-cleaned data and standard scripts

                ·        Technical Support: Provide technical support to users, troubleshooting hardware, software, and connectivity issues across varying levels of complexity

                ·        OS Administration: Administer Linux operating systems, including provisioning, patching, updates, and security hardening

                    The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated Researcher to join the Institute’s Advanced Renewable Energy Systems (ARES) Group of EEWRC Centre on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Athalassas Campus.

                    The successful candidate will contribute to the group’s computational research activities, with a particular focus on supporting and advancing the objectives of the EU-funded Solarize and IndHEAP projects, as well as other ongoing and future research initiatives.

                    The selected candidate will play a key role in strengthening and expanding the group’s computational capabilities for the simulation, analysis, and optimization of advanced thermal energy systems and processes. This includes the development of high-fidelity multiphysics models of existing research infrastructure, as well as novel system architectures and emerging energy concepts under investigation.

                     A central component of the position involves the development of transient, multidomain thermofluidic system models using object-oriented programming. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and maintaining in-house libraries to enable flexible, modular, and scalable system simulations. This includes implementing component models with varying levels of fidelity (0D, 1D, physics-based, and/or experimentally calibrated), depending on the system-level objectives and research requirements.

                    The candidate will further develop workflows to integrate these system models with optimization and control frameworks, enabling automated design exploration, parameter estimation, and performance optimization. These capabilities will support the development of advanced multiphysics simulation environments and digital twins of thermal energy systems, including coupling with external tools such as optical ray-tracing software (e.g., Tonatiuh++) and other numerical simulation platforms.

                     

                    Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

                           Develop computational models and simulation workflows to support the design, analysis, and optimization of the group’s research facilities, experimental infrastructure, and ongoing research projects.

                           Develop, maintain, and expand in-house modeling libraries, codes, and computational tools, particularly within Modelica/OpenModelica and associated Python-based environments.

                           Conduct parametric analyses, sensitivity studies, and optimization investigations to evaluate system performance and support design improvements, including model calibration and validation against experimental data where applicable.

                           Develop co-simulation routines and interoperable modeling workflows using standards such as the Functional Mock-up Interface (FMI), enabling coupling between heterogeneous simulation tools and supporting digital twin development.

                           Perform Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and system-level multiphysics simulations to support the analysis and optimization of advanced thermal and renewable energy systems.

                           Collaborate with internal and external research partners to ensure effective technical coordination and implementation of project requirements and assist in hosting and supporting visiting researchers and collaborators in computational modeling activities.

                           Contribute to the preparation of project deliverables, technical reports, progress reports, and related project documentation, ensuring timely and high-quality submission in accordance with project requirements.

                           Initiate, develop, and lead new research lines aligned with local and regional needs and resources, including areas such as solar industrial heat, thermal energy storage, and thermally driven cooling technologies.

                           Disseminate research outcomes through peer-reviewed scientific publications, technical reports, open datasets, and documented computational workflows, and present findings at international conferences, workshops, and events targeting both specialized and non-specialized audiences, including industry stakeholders and policymakers.

                           Contribute to the preparation and development of competitive research proposals and funding applications at national and international levels.

                           Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams across The Cyprus Institute’s research centers and external partner institutions to support integrated, cross-disciplinary research initiatives.

                           Maintain well-documented, reproducible, and sustainable computational workflows and tools to support long-term research and innovation activities within the group.

                    Position Specific Required Qualifications:

                           PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Thermal Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics or a closely related field with a strong focus on thermal sciences, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and energy systems modeling.

                           Demonstrated expertise in the development of multidomain and multiphysics simulation tools for thermal and energy systems, using platforms such as Modelica, TRNSYS, or equivalent in-house or open-source environments.

                           Strong programming skills in scientific computing languages such as Python, C++, or similar, including experience in developing, maintaining, and documenting scientific codes and simulation workflows.

                           Demonstrable experience with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools for the simulation of fluid flow, heat transfer, and conjugate heat transfer problems (e.g., OpenFOAM, ANSYS Fluent, COMSOL, or equivalent).

                           Proven track record of peer-reviewed publications in thermal engineering, energy systems, or closely related fields.

                           Solid understanding of heat decarbonization pathways and the integration of renewable energy technologies, including solar thermal systems, thermal energy storage, and sector coupling approaches.

                           Experience presenting research findings at scientific conferences, workshops, or technical forums, including publications in conference proceedings.

                     

                    Position Preferred Qualifications:

                           Advanced proficiency in the development of computational models for thermal and energy systems, including multiphysics and multidomain modeling approaches.

                           Experience with optimization of thermal systems, including parametric analysis, design optimization, and integration with optimization frameworks (e.g., GenOpt, SciPy, PySwarms, or similar tools).

                           Familiarity with model interoperability and co-simulation standards, such as the Functional Mock-up Interface (FMI), and experience integrating models across multiple simulation environments.

                           Experience with building energy simulations and tools (e.g., TRNSYS, Modelica-based libraries, or equivalent).

                           Research experience related to medium- and high-temperature thermal systems, particularly in the context of industrial heat decarbonization and renewable thermal energy applications.

                          The ERA Chair “One Archaeological Science” project (One Archeological Science – OneArchSci) aims to promote the use of isotope analyses across the archaeological science teams at STARC. The position offers an opportunity to build on the research profile of our material science laboratories within the domain of (inorganic) archaeological materials science, with expertise in geological methodologies such as petrography, mineralogy and chemical (elemental and isotope ratio) analysis methods. We seek candidates who can capitalise on this investment and in addition can contribute to research in environmental archaeology and human bioarchaeology.

                          The successful applicant will be expected to be a leader in the development of key research facilities at The Cyprus Institute (continuation of SEM-EDS and optical petrography lab, additional self-acquired laboratory equipment), will develop the use of international analytical facilities in the framework of team science, and will explore the development of such laboratories at CyI. The successful applicant shall work regularly with the other Archaeological Science faculty at STARC for research development in the lab and the field, including the development of isotope-based research. They will contribute broadly to practical skills development and teaching at postgraduate level across the range of disciplinary expertise and joint programmes offered by CyI.                             The successful candidate will support ongoing and new research initiatives involving the study of human skeletal remains from archaeological contexts in Cyprus, dating from prehistory to more recent contexts (pre-1850 CE).

                            The successful candidate's responsibilities include technical and analytical aspects of osteoarchaeological research, emphasizing laboratory-based work but also occasional excavation in the field. The successful candidate will contribute to the understanding of past human health, diet, mobility, activity, and demography through the integration of osteological, isotopic, and imaging data.

                             

                            The rank of the position (Research Technical Assistant or Research Technical Scientist) will depend on selected candidates qualifications and experience.

                            Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

                                   Conduct osteological assessments, including identification, inventory, and analysis of human skeletal remains.

                                   Perform a comprehensive macroscopic study of human skeletal remains, covering taphonomy, demography, paleopathology, and other aspects.

                                   Prepare and process samples for isotopic analysis in compliance with safety standards.

                                   Manage osteoarcheological laboratory workflows, including cataloguing, curation, and database management.

                                   Implement and refine laboratory protocols, data management standards, and quality control procedures.

                                   Collaborate with archaeologists, bioarcheologists, and other specialists in interdisciplinary research projects.

                                   Contribute to the preparation of technical reports, publications, and dissemination materials.

                                   Assist with training and supervision of students and interns.

                            Position Specific Required Qualifications:

                                   Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Human Osteoarchaeology, Biological Anthropology, Bioarchaeology, or a closely related field

                                   Demonstrated experience in the macroscopic analysis of human skeletal remains, including remains from challenging contexts, such as poorly preserved and/or commingled remains.

                                   Experience with excavation of human remains.

                                   Knowledge of the archaeology of Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean region.

                                   Strong organizational and data management skills, including familiarity with digital databases and research documentation standards.

                                   Excellent attention to detail, accuracy in data recording, and adherence to ethical standards regarding human remains.

                                   Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary and collaborative research environment.

                             

                            Position Preferred Qualifications:

                                   Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Human Osteoarchaeology, Biological Anthropology, Bioarchaeology, or a closely related field

                                   Familiarity with quantitative and statistical methods used in osteoarchaeological research.

                                   Experience using digital and imaging tools for skeletal documentation (e.g., SEM, micro-CT, 3D scanning, photogrammetry).

                                   Knowledge of isotopic and biomolecular techniques (e.g., stable isotope, aDNA, or proteomic approaches).

The successful candidate will assume a research role under the guidance of senior researchers and faculty of EEWRC to fully utilise the field of energy management and Distributed Energy Systems to propose, drive and implement relevant research lines.

                              This role is designed for someone eager to work at the forefront of energy research in a dynamic, collaborative environment. The successful candidate will preferably be familiar with a software environment designed for instrument connectivity and control such as NI LabVIEW. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to work with advanced infrastructure that supports cutting-edge projects in energy poly-generation, including thermal energy storage and other renewable energy applications.                                 The PERSPECT project aims to enhance the accuracy of Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) imaging in the detection of small lesions and brain damage through personalized tomographic techniques that accurately describe the physical processes of photon scattering and attenuation in relation to the patient’s anatomy.

                                Furthermore, the successful candidate will validate the proposed methodology through extensive simulation and experimental studies to ensure robustness and reliability in clinical settings and develop specific software algorithms by using state of the art programming tools running on HPC.

                                 

                                Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

                                The selected candidate will be required to organize clinical data and to support with the installation of the developed programming code on GPU based HPC farms.

                                    The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit, Science- and Technology-oriented Educational and Research Institution, based in Cyprus and governed by an acclaimed Board of Directors. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres, namely:

                                    Considerable cross-centre interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s scientific ethos.

                                    The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a new faculty member at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor in the broader area of regional atmospheric emissions and modelling, to join the Institute’s CARE-C Centre of Excellence on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Athalassa’s Campus.

                                    The successful candidate will strengthen the Institute's expertise in atmospheric modelling and environmental data analysis, primarily focusing on developing and applying numerical models for emissions, atmospheric transport and dispersion, and chemical processes. The role involves analyzing and integrating various environmental datasets—including emission inventories, in situ measurements, and remote sensing observations (e.g., from satellites)—to support atmospheric modelling studies that investigate connections to air quality, climate, and public health.

                                    The new faculty should contribute to the research dynamics of the Environmental Predictions Department (EPD) of CARE-C and CyI by pursuing cross-cutting collaborations with related areas, including atmospheric observations, numerical techniques, climate modelling and data science.

                                    Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

                                    ·       Develop and apply state-of-the-art numerical modelling tools of air pollution emissions/transport/concentrations across the Mediterranean - Middle East and various time scales, aligned with the regional focus of CARE-C and (inter)national policies (e.g., EU Green Deal, Paris Agreement, national priorities).

                                    ·       Connect atmospheric observations performed by Environmental Observations Department (EOD) researchers with the modelling work across different departments of CARE-C, to integrate environmental data into studies of air quality and public health effects.

                                    ·       Advise and support of national and international bodies and agencies in the reporting and evaluation of emissions, exposure, and mitigation measures aimed at improving air quality and avoiding socioeconomic costs. 

                                    ·       Provide career opportunities for students and prospects for collaboration projects and funding at both national and international levels (e.g., EU).

                                    Position Specific Required Qualifications:

                                    ·       PhD in Natural / Mathematical Sciences and/or Environmental Science/Engineering

                                    ·       Strong international research reputation and experience in teaching/mentoring in the relevant scientific field.

                                    ·       Compelling record of scientific publications and presentations at international conferences and other events, demonstrating significant contributions to the relevant scientific field.

                                    ·       Experience in supervising and mentoring postgraduate students and potential for leading a team of researchers.

                                    ·       Excellent communication, interpersonal, leadership, and managerial skills.

                                    ·       Excellent knowledge of the English language.

                                    Duration of appointment:

                                    The candidate will work in Cyprus and will be offered a tenured or tenure-track position.

                                    Remuneration details:

                                    Salary Band: For Assistant Professor CyI7.1 - CyI7.8 / For Associate Professor (CyI9.1 - CyI10.8)

                                    Position’s Starting Salary: CyI7.1 - €55668.86 / CyI9.1 - 70648.69

                                    Previous years of experience in the same rank offered by CyI will be considered for the first placement on the pay band. For each completed year of previous experience at the time of contract start, one pay step will be recognised on the respective pay band.
