The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated Researcher to join the Impacts and Policy Department (IPD) of CARE-C Centre of Excellence on a full-time basis (100%) for its premises in Athalassas Campus. 

The selected candidate will join a research team that aims to develop early-warning support systems for assessing climate-sensitive vector-borne disease risk.

More specifically, the successful candidate will engage with the VEClim project, which aims to advance the development and operational use of mathematical models for climate-sensitive vector dynamics and vector-borne diseases through an interdisciplinary and collaborative approach. The project focuses on developing an open modelling platform that brings together predictive models, climate and surveillance data, and early-warning applications. VEClim aims to support researchers and public-health stakeholders by providing reusable modelling resources and tools for assessing current and future changes in vector activity and disease risk.

The selected candidate is expected to support current research at CyI on the development, calibration and implementation of mathematical models of vector population dynamics and vector-borne disease transmission. For this, a strong foundation in mathematical modelling, scientific programming and data analysis, as well as the ability to produce well-documented modelling software and high-quality research outputs, are essential.

Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

  • Perform internationally competitive scientific research on mathematical modelling of climate-sensitive vector dynamics and vector-borne disease risk.
  • Contribute to the development, calibration and implementation of predictive models, their integration into the VEClim platform, and the development of early-warning applications.

Position Specific Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Life, Health or Mathematical Sciences, Public Health, Engineering, or a related field
  • Proficiency in Python and/or R, with an aptitude for learning other programming languages
  • Experience in mathematical modeling, quantitative data analysis and visualization
  • Strong understanding of mathematical, computational and biological concepts
  • Experience in developing modeling tools or user interfaces

Position Specific Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in analyzing environmental data, particularly weather and climate datasets
  • Experience with biological, epidemiological or vector surveillance data
  • Experience with reproducible scientific workflows, version control and collaborative software development
  • Experience with GIS and geospatial analysis
  • Relevant publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals
  • Knowledge of Greek will be considered an advantage, particularly for engagement with local stakeholders

    The Research Technical Assistant in Osteoarchaeology will support the implementation of the Bodies in Transit project, which investigates human mobility and lived experiences in Cyprus from the Bronze Age to the Ottoman period. 

    The project combines skeletal, isotopic, and AI-assisted analyses with archaeological and historical evidence, and seeks to understand not only where people moved, but also how mobility shaped identity, health, and lived experience across different social groups and life stages, while developing an innovative interdisciplinary framework. 

    The successful candidate will contribute to the analysis of archaeological human skeletal remains, the recording and management of osteological and contextual data, preparation of samples for laboratory analyses, and the interpretation and dissemination of research findings. The position offers the opportunity to work within an interdisciplinary research environment in collaboration with archaeologists, historians, and international partners. 

    Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

    • Conduct macroscopic osteological analysis of archaeological human skeletal remains, following established laboratory protocols and quality standards.
    • Assist in the selection, documentation, and inventory of skeletal assemblages from archaeological collections.
    • Prepare samples for isotopic analyses and assist with associated laboratory documentation and logistics.
    • Contribute to data processing, statistical analyses, and the integration of osteological, archaeological, and historical datasets.
    • Support with literature reviews and the development of the project's theoretical framework.
    • Assist in preparing scientific publications, conference presentations, reports, and other dissemination materials.
    • Contribute to outreach, public engagement, and Open Science activities.

     

    Position Specific Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology or another closely related discipline.
    • Experience in the analysis and recording of archaeological human skeletal remains.
    • Experience with archaeological databases and data management.
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
    • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within an interdisciplinary research team.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.

    Position Preferred Qualifications:

    • Master's degree in Osteoarchaeology, Bioarchaeology, Biological Anthropology, or a related field.
    • Experience working with archaeological skeletal collections from the Eastern Mediterranean.
    • Familiarity with isotopic methods in bioarchaeology.
    • Experience with statistical analysis (e.g., R or SPSS).
    • Experience contributing to peer-reviewed publications or conference presentations.

      Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

      • Develop and lead independent research projects in archaeological ceramic analysis, including fieldwork, experimental approaches, and laboratory analysis, ideally with an isotopic component. 
      • Develop research projects that complement those of the other One Archaeological Science team members by investigating networks, technology and provenance through ceramic analysis.
      • Contribute to current research activities of the One Archaeological Science team, including exploring and promoting the integration of isotopic analyses in the team's research.
      • Co-develop data generation and documentation protocols and advance the integration of ceramic analysis within the broader archaeological materials science research of the team.

        Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

        • Develop and lead independent research projects in archaeological metal production, including fieldwork, experimental approaches, and laboratory analysis.
        • Contribute to the full breadth of the existing research activities of the A. G. Leventis Chair in Archaeological Materials Science.
        • Co-develop data generation and documentation protocols, and advance data processing and visualization applications across archaeological materials science.
        • Contribute in a leading role to the mentorship activities of the A. G. Leventis Chair, both supporting CyI-hosted visiting researchers and through local engagement with scholars particularly in West Africa.

          As part of its continued institutional development and strengthening of its international positioning, CyI is establishing a Science Communication, Public Affairs and Engagement Office to strengthen the Institute's visibility, reputation, stakeholder engagement and external relations, while enhancing public understanding of the Institute's research, educational and innovation activities at national, European and international levels.

          The Position

          The Cyprus Institute seeks to appoint a Head of Science Communication, Public Affairs and Engagement to lead the Institute’s strategy for institutional visibility, stakeholder engagement, external relations and public communication, ensuring that the Institute's scientific mission, research achievements, societal impact and regional role are effectively communicated to diverse audiences in Cyprus, the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East region, Europe and internationally.

          The selected candidate will lead an Office embedded within the Administration and Finance Division, reflecting the Institute’s integrated approach to governance and institutional development. At operational level the Head of the Office will have direct engagement with the President and senior leadership to support strategic priorities and external positioning.

          The successful candidate will be expected to build and lead a high-performing function responsible for advancing the Institute's science communication, public affairs, stakeholder engagement, institutional visibility and external relations objectives. The role includes the development and implementation of a comprehensive science communication, engagement and communications strategy that strengthens the visibility and reputation of The Cyprus Institute, enhances public understanding of its research and innovation activities, and supports meaningful engagement with policymakers, partners, funders, media and society at large.

          The role requires an understanding of science and research environments, combined with proven experience in communication, outreach, media relations, public engagement, and institutional representation. Experience in public affairs, external relations, stakeholder engagement, institutional communications, public engagement, media relations, policy outreach or related functions is required. Experience communicating complex scientific, technical or research-related topics to diverse audiences will be considered an advantage.

           

          Key Responsibilities

          The Head of Science Communication, Public Affairs and Engagement will:

          • Provide strategic advice to the President and senior leadership on external engagement, messaging, and institutional positioning.
          • Lead the Institute's science communication efforts by translating complex scientific, technical and research outputs into clear, accessible and compelling content for policymakers, stakeholders, media, schools and the wider public.
          • Develop and implement the Institute's public affairs, engagement and institutional visibility strategy. 
          • Shape and oversee CyI’s institutional narrative, public profile, and key communication platforms, ensuring coherence across all external engagement channels. 
          • Build strong relationships with journalists, media organizations, schools, universities, public authorities, embassies, international organizations, and civil society groups.
          • Coordinate press releases, articles, interviews, public statements, speeches, newsletters, digital content, and institutional communication material.
          • Lead the planning and delivery of public lectures, outreach events, science festivals, school engagement activities, stakeholder briefings, and public dialogue initiatives.
          • Lead and oversee the Institute’s events and institutional engagement function, ensuring that all events are strategically designed and delivered as instruments of institutional positioning, stakeholder engagement, and external visibility.
          • Establish a coherent framework for institutional events and outreach activities, ensuring alignment with strategic priorities and consistency in messaging and impact
          • Build and maintain strategic partnerships and networks that enhance CyI’s role and influence at national and international level. 
          • Establish and monitor performance indicators related to institutional visibility, engagement effectiveness, and reputational impact. 
          • Ensure strategic alignment of communication and outreach activities across the Institute, providing direction and oversight to guarantee consistency, coherence, and impact.
          • Ensure consistency, accuracy and quality across all public-facing institutional communications and engagement activities.

           

          Profile and Qualifications

          Candidates should demonstrate:

          • A proven track record in public affairs, external relations, stakeholder engagement, institutional positioning, strategic engagement, communications or related functions.
          • Experience operating at a senior level, advising leadership on strategy and external engagement.
          • Experience in science communication or in communicating complex scientific, technical, research or innovation-related topics to diverse audiences is considered an advantage.
          • A solid understanding of policy environments, international collaboration, and institutional dynamics, ideally within research, academia, public sector, or international organizations.
          • Proven ability to develop and implement strategic initiatives with measurable impact.
          • Excellent interpersonal, communication, analytical, and judgement skills.
          • Bachelor’s degree.
          • Master’s degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Media or any related field or Master’s degree at any field with 2 years of relevant experience. (over and above of the below mentioned experience required)
          • Demonstrated relevant experience of 7 years and medium level coordinating/management experience of at least 3 years (for the rank of Manager). 
          • Demonstrated relevant experience of 5 years (for the rank of Coordinator)
          • Excellent knowledge of the English and Greek languages both verbally and in writing

          Terms of Appointment

          The rank of the position (Coordinator or Manager) will depend on selected candidate’s qualifications and experience. The position is offered on a full-time basis. The initial contract will be for a fixed term, with the possibility of renewal or conversion to an indefinite contract subject to institutional needs and performance.

            The successful candidate will join the OneArchSci team as an Administrative Assistant to support the project’s activities.                 The successful candidate will conduct high-quality research at the interface of machine-learning methodology and impactful applications, combining original scientific work with the development and rigorous evaluation of AI/ML methods and systems.

                The fellow’s initial activities will be supported primarily through Pharos-CY, the AI Factory Antenna project of Cyprus, and HYPPOS-AI, an RIF-funded project concerning the use of deep-learning technologies in chemical-engineering and manufacturing plants. These initiatives will provide concrete research challenges, data, interdisciplinary collaborations, and pathways to real-world impact, but they will not define the full scientific scope of the position.

                The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop complementary research directions, initiate new collaborations, and pursue publishable work across machine learning and artificial intelligence, in alignment with the broader research agenda of CaSToRC. The position is particularly suited to researchers who are interested both in advancing ML methods and in validating them in demanding real-world settings. The fellow will collaborate with ML researchers, computational scientists, domain experts, and industrial partners, and will have opportunities to contribute to new proposals and future research initiatives.

                Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

                • Conduct original research in machine learning and artificial intelligence, including methodological research motivated by challenging real-world applications.
                • Contribute to technical activities in applied R&D projects, initially including Pharos-CY and HYPPOS-AI, covering problem formulation, data analysis, model development, experimental evaluation, and prototype validation.
                • Design rigorous and reproducible computational experiments, including appropriate baselines, evaluation protocols, robustness analyses, and interpretation of results.
                • Publish research findings in leading peer-reviewed conferences and journals and present results at scientific, technical, and project meetings.
                • Collaborate with interdisciplinary researchers and industrial partners to translate application requirements into well-defined ML research questions and technically sound solutions.

                Position Specific Required Qualifications:

                • PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Computational Science, or another relevant field in the Natural Sciences or Engineering with a substantial machine-learning research component.
                • Evidence of the ability to conduct high-quality research in machine learning, artificial intelligence, or a closely related field, demonstrated through publications, the doctoral thesis, preprints, software, datasets, or other substantive research outputs.
                • Strong understanding of modern machine-learning methods and experimental methodology.
                • Good programming skills, preferably in Python, and experience with at least one widely used machine-learning or deep-learning framework.
                • Ability to formulate open-ended research or technical problems, develop appropriate methodological approaches, and evaluate them critically.
                • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to interdisciplinary and collaborative projects.
                • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.

                        Assistant Professors, the entry level of Faculty at the Cyprus Institute, are responsible to lead and carry out research, innovation, and education activities, mentor students, and contribute to the development of the Cyprus Institute’s and their Research Centre’s scientific vision and mission in their field of expertise.

                        Position Specific Responsibilities/activities

                        The successful candidate is expected to carry out research and advance the state-of-the-art in decision support methods for use in policy decisions to achieve zero-carbon economies, at national, European and international level. For this purpose, the successful candidate is expected to collaborate closely with researchers at STeDI-RC and other CyI Centres (EEWRC and CARE-C). CyI is the main advisor of the government of Cyprus in energy, environmental and climate policy, with continuous support to public authorities on implementing and assessing policies of the European Green Deal. Therefore, in addition to groundbreaking research, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to this advisory role as well.

                        ·        PhD degree related to Decision Support methods for assessing the impacts of climate, energy and/or environmental policies.

The new Research Technical Scientist is expected to bring expertise in post-processing of 3D data, including shape and geometry analysis, extraction of features, 3D modelling and use of web-based 3D viewers, such as Potree, Aton, 3D HOP and similar.

                          This position is funded under the DIGIARC 2 project, within the framework of the INTERREG VI-A Greece–Cyprus Programme. DIGIARC 2 project is co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and by National Funds of Greece and Cyprus.

                          Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

                          ·        2D and 3D documentation of Heritage sites, monuments, archaeological artifacts and works of art;

                              The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a highly qualified and motivated professional to join the Institute’s Graduate School on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Athalassas Campus.

                              The successful candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day execution of activities of the Doctoral Networks Marie Skłodowska-Curie projects. The Senior Education and Training Officer should be an experienced professional who will execute administrative and project-related management activities with added coordination responsibility for the DN projects. They will also contribute to the management of the school’s activities related to these projects and to the implementation of relevant tasks of the Graduate School.

                              The successful candidate will manage the training, reporting, operational and financial aspects of the Doctoral Networks projects in close collaboration with other institute staff.

                               

                              Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

                              ·        Execution of Doctoral Networks projects administration and coordination activities, including financial reporting, deliverables, communication with funding organizations.

                              ·        Planning and implementation of Networking and community building activities with National and International stakeholders.

                              ·        Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Doctoral Networks projects and coordinate the activities of the consortia involved in the projects.

                              ·        Ensure that projects’ documentation is completed in accordance with the grant agreement and that the documentation is updated and properly archived.

                              ·        Maintain a clear view of projects’ deliverables and timelines, ensuring coordination between partners and on-time delivery and prepare relevant reports (non-scientific).

                              ·        Keeping track of the project's budget / expenditure and prepare financial reports.

                              ·        Collaborate with colleagues in and outside the doctoral networks, including partners from the non-academic environment and the European Commission.

                              ·        Responsible for the communication and dissemination of the specific projects, including the projects’ website and social media.

                              ·        Organize and participate in research and training events, and travel in connection with projects’ meetings and training sessions.

                              ·        Be responsible for identifying and attracting funding through competitive educational and training grants, search and promote funding opportunities, and assist in proposal preparation

                              ·        Participate in external events, either in Cyprus or abroad, for the promotion of the Doctoral Networks projects’ activities and as required for ensuring the smooth operation of the projects.

                              ·        Liaise with staff across the Institute for various matters related to the Doctoral Network projects’ operations

                              Position Specific Required Qualifications:

                              ·        A Master’s Degree in any scientific field.

                              ·        Experience in managing EU and/or national-funded research projects.

                                The successful candidate will provide technical, analytical, and research support for archaeobotanical projects, focusing on the recovery, identification, analysis, and interpretation of plant remains from archaeological sites in Cyprus and EMME region.

                                The role requires hands-on expertise in archaeobotanical methodologies, laboratory management, and data processing, as well as collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.

                                The research technical scientist will also use laboratory equipment such as SEM, instrumentation  for extraction of starches and phytolith and will be responsible for preparation of samples for isotopic analysis.

                                Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

                                ·       Manage archaeobotanical samples (flotation, wet-sieving, sorting, microscopic identification) and curate reference collections; 

                                ·       Ensure quality control, update lab protocols, and oversee equipment and sample archiving; 

                                ·       Conduct identification and analysis of macro- and micro-botanical remains to study past agriculture, diet, trade, and environment;

                                ·       Contribute to the preparation of research publications, reports, and presentations;

                                ·       Support grant applications by providing technical input on archaeobotanical aspects;

                                  The Cyprus Institute invites applications for highly motivated professionals to apply for 3 positions of Research Technical Scientist-Computer/Software Engineer (Junior or Senior Positions according to the candidate's qualifications and experience) on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at the Nicosia Campus.

                                  These roles will support the joint operation of the HPCF and DiGiNN, engage in a diverse matrix of activities across a unified value chain, manage access to the latest hardware, including NVIDIA B200 and RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell nodes. The candidates will get involved in diverse areas ranging from supporting "standard" users adopting state-of-the-art open-weights models to assisting high-level research units in complex, research-driven engineering. They will also act as the technical engine for DiGiNN’s "Test Before Invest" services, directly impacting the digital maturity of Cyprus. Moreover, they will orchestrate and deliver technical training, contributing to the national upskilling mandate.

                                  The European Digital Innovation Hub in Cyprus, DiGiNN, is a strategic consortium acting as a national "one-stop-shop" to accelerate the digital transformation of Cypriot SMEs and the public sector. Co-funded by the EU and the Cypriot government, it provides a set of free services ranging from ‘testing before invest’ services (AI, HPC, Cybersecurity) and digital skills training to investment support and ecosystem networking.

                                  The CyI High-Performance Computing Facility (HPCF) provides advanced computing ICT services and supports the activities of CyI and its Research Centres. The HPCF is the national supercomputing facility for Cyprus and provides compute and data resources to the research and innovation community of Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean region.

                                    (ii)                generative AI and multimodal learning,

                                      The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a new faculty member at the level of Associate Professor in the broader area of Archaeological Materials Science within the framework of the ERA Chair project “One Archaeological Science”, to join the Institute’s STARC Centre on a full-time basis (100% FTE) for its premises at Athalassa’s Campus.

                                      The ERA Chair “One Archaeological Science” project (One Archeological Science – OneArchSci) aims to promote the use of isotope analyses across the archaeological science teams at STARC. The position offers an opportunity to build on the research profile of our material science laboratories within the domain of (inorganic) archaeological materials science, with expertise in geological methodologies such as petrography, mineralogy and chemical (elemental and isotope ratio) analysis methods. We seek candidates who can capitalise on this investment and in addition can contribute to research in environmental archaeology and human bioarchaeology.

                                      The successful applicant will be expected to be a leader in the development of key research facilities at The Cyprus Institute (continuation of SEM-EDS and optical petrography lab, additional self-acquired laboratory equipment), will develop the use of international analytical facilities in the framework of team science, and will explore the development of such laboratories at CyI. The successful applicant shall work regularly with the other Archaeological Science faculty at STARC for research development in the lab and the field, including the development of isotope-based research. They will contribute broadly to practical skills development and teaching at postgraduate level across the range of disciplinary expertise and joint programmes offered by CyI. They may also develop specialist modules in line with the curriculum and their own research expertise. They will be expected to attract external grants to recruit and supervise postgraduate research students and postdoctoral researchers.                                         The successful candidate should have a strong background in energy management, software development, smart grids and microgrids, focusing on the co-design and operation of an Energy Management System (EMS) at the state-of-the-art PROTEAS facility.

                                        In this role, the successful applicant will develop, optimize, operate, and maintain an EMS that contribute to the efficient management of renewable energy resources. The successful candidate will assume a research role under the guidance of senior researchers and faculty of EEWRC to fully utilise the field of energy management and Distributed Energy Systems to propose, drive and implement relevant research lines.

                                        This role is designed for someone eager to work at the forefront of energy research in a dynamic, collaborative environment. The successful candidate will preferably be familiar with a software environment designed for instrument connectivity and control such as NI LabVIEW. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to work with advanced infrastructure that supports cutting-edge projects in energy poly-generation, including thermal energy storage and other renewable energy applications. The work will involve extensive test runs of software developed, aligned with simulations and modelling results generated from scientists at PROTEAS, ensuring seamless integration of renewable technologies and storage into EMS designs. The facility is uniquely positioned to support both fundamental research and practical solutions for industry, giving you a well-rounded experience in both academic and applied research.

                                        Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

                                        ·        Design and develop, maintain, and enhance the Energy Management System (EMS) built on the existing control architecture of PROTEAS.

                                        ·        Optimise EMS operation to ensure efficient management of renewable energy flows between solar, wind, battery, and thermal storage systems.

                                        ·        Develop and maintain software tools for system control, data acquisition, and automation — preferably in NI LabVIEW or equivalent platforms.

                                        ·        Build smart algorithms to optimize real-time energy production from various sources and consumption across various loads, considering factors like cost, market conditions, and user preferences.

                                        ·        Conduct real-time experiments and test runs, validating EMS performance against simulation and modelling results.

                                        ·        Collaborate with senior researchers at EEWRC to align EMS development with ongoing research on distributed energy systems and digital twins.

                                          The successful candidate will strengthen the Institute's expertise in atmospheric modelling and environmental data analysis, primarily focusing on developing and applying numerical models for emissions, atmospheric transport and dispersion, and chemical processes. The role involves analyzing and integrating various environmental datasets—including emission inventories, in situ measurements, and remote sensing observations (e.g., from satellites)—to support atmospheric modelling studies that investigate connections to air quality, climate, and public health.

                                          The new faculty should contribute to the research dynamics of the Environmental Predictions Department (EPD) of CARE-C and CyI by pursuing cross-cutting collaborations with related areas, including atmospheric observations, numerical techniques, climate modelling and data science.

                                          Position Specific Responsibilities/activities:

                                          ·       Develop and apply state-of-the-art numerical modelling tools of air pollution emissions/transport/concentrations across the Mediterranean - Middle East and various time scales, aligned with the regional focus of CARE-C and (inter)national policies (e.g., EU Green Deal, Paris Agreement, national priorities).

                                          ·       Connect atmospheric observations performed by Environmental Observations Department (EOD) researchers with the modelling work across different departments of CARE-C, to integrate environmental data into studies of air quality and public health effects.
