Centre / Unit

Centre for Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering (NAOME)

Job Purpose

The Assistant Scientist - Mechanical/Marine Engineer will support the implementation and development of research, innovation and industry-oriented projects within CMMI’s Marine Technology Division. The role combines engineering and technical activities in areas such as sustainable marine energy systems, marine engines and generator sets, alternative fuels, emissions measurement, sensors and IoT systems, modelling and digital technologies, contributing to the effective delivery and future growth of the Division’s project portfolio.

The position will involve close collaboration with researchers, engineers, administrative teams, industry stakeholders and external partners. Depending on the candidate’s experience, the role may also include funding and tender development activities, including identifying opportunities, developing project concepts, building partnerships and preparing competitive proposals.

Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Contribute to the design, modelling, testing and evaluation of mechanical, marine and energy systems. 
  • Support experimental activities involving marine engines, generator sets, alternative fuels, emissions, performance measurement and data acquisition. 
  • Develop or apply CAD, CFD, digital modelling and engineering analysis methods. 
  • Integrate sensors, data-acquisition systems and IoT platforms for monitoring marine systems and experiments. 
  • Analyse technical data and contribute to reports, publications, presentations and project deliverables. 
  • Monitor relevant EU, national and international funding, tender and collaboration opportunities. 
  • Work with technical teams to develop project ideas into structured concepts, objectives, methodologies, work packages, tasks, deliverables and expected impacts. 
  • Support the identification of suitable partners and CMMI’s positioning in emerging consortia and collaborative initiatives. 
  • Draft and review technical proposal sections and coordinate input from researchers, engineers and external partners. 
  • Help ensure that proposals are clear, complete and aligned with the relevant call requirements and evaluation criteria.

Minimum Eligibility Criteria (Required Qualifications)

  • A BSc or higher degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering or another closely related technical or scientific field. Candidates with a closely related background, including digital engineering or computer science applied to marine systems, may also be considered where they demonstrate strong technical understanding and a successful record in proposal development. 
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: 
    • CAD and CFD modelling; 
    • Python, MATLAB or other relevant engineering tools; 
    • marine engines, generator sets or energy systems;
    • alternative fuels and emissions measurement; 
    • sensors, data acquisition, IoT systems or digital twins;
    • experimental testing and engineering data analysis. 
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English.
  • Ability to understand technical concepts and communicate them clearly to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience supporting the preparation of research, innovation or technical proposals will be considered an advantage. 
  • Demonstrable contribution to successful EU, national or international proposals will be considered a strong advantage. 
  • Experience with programmes such as Horizon Europe, Horizon 2020, Digital Europe, EMFAF, LIFE, CEF, Interreg, EDF or Research and Innovation Foundation programmes will be considered an advantage. 
  • Experience in opportunity scanning, partner identification, consortium development, proposal coordination or technical bid preparation will be considered an advantage. 
  • A postgraduate degree and research publication record will be considered advantages but are not mandatory. Candidates will also be assessed on their practical engineering capabilities and contribution to successful proposals.

CMMI INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME 2026

The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) announces its fifth round of the Internship Programme for the period May – November 2026, for undergraduate and postgraduate level students. Through this programme, CMMI aims to bring new talent closer to sea-related issues and helping them understand the industry and society needs within the spectrum of the marine and maritime sectors.

If you’re a University student or a recent graduate, our Internship Programme offers you the unique opportunity to gain an immersive experience and explore the work performed by scientists.

We are looking for candidates who have a strong research interest, maturity, willpower and excitement to work in a research centre and who are motivated to learn and positively contribute to the team.

Duration

Erasmus+ VET Mobility

CMMI is a VET-accredited organisation under the Erasmus+ Programme (2025 Call, valid until 31 December 2027) and invites applications from vocational education and training (VET) learners who wish to undertake an Erasmus+ mobility period in the marine and maritime sectors. This opportunity is aimed at learners and recent graduates seeking high-quality international learning experiences that complement their vocational education, enhance practical and digital skills, and support professional development within Europe’s blue economy.

1. Who Can Apply

  • Learners currently enrolled in VET programmes
  • Recent graduates of VET programmes
  • Recent graduates relevant to the marine and maritime sectors
  • University students enrolled in VET-related programmes (18+ years old) (i.e. marine sciences, engineering, aquaculture, and digitalisation)

Applicants should have a clear interest in marine and maritime sectors and be motivated to participate in an international learning and training experience. CMMI encourages participation from learners with fewer opportunities and ensures inclusive, accessible mobility experiences in line with Erasmus+ principles.

3. Educators and Trainers for Training Purposes

(Participants enrolled in programmes leading to a teaching or training career, or recent graduates of such programmes)

Duration: 10 to 365 days

Activities may include:

  • Practical training and job shadowing
  • Development of pedagogical, professional, and digital competences
  •  Exposure to innovative training methods and international VET practices

Eligible Mobility Activities

During their mobility period at CMMI, learners may participate in:

  • Work-based learning and practical training activities
  • Applied vocational learning in laboratory, research, innovation, or training environments
  • Skills development activities related to sustainability, digitalisation, and emerging maritime technologies
  • Observation, hands-on practice, and participation in real operational or project-based settings
  • Structured learning activities aligned with agreed learning outcomes and VET curricula

Open Call for Volunteers - GreenLink Project (Cyprus)

The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) invites young people based in Cyprus to apply as volunteers for the EU-funded project GreenLink: Youth Empowerment - The EU Human Grid. This six-month volunteering opportunity (April – September 2026) offers hands-on involvement in civic, cultural, and environmental activities, empowering youth to actively participate in democratic life, intercultural dialogue, and social inclusion.

About the GreenLink Project

GreenLink connects 11 cities across 10 EU countries to promote civic engagement, inclusion, and long-term cooperation among young people - especially youth with fewer opportunities. The project uses themes such as environmental action, peace, minority rights, and culture as tools for youth mobilisation. At its core is a local volunteering mechanism, inspired by civic service models and linked to EU mobility programmes such as the European Solidarity Corps.

In Cyprus, activities coordinated by CMMI will culminate in the Festival of the Sea, taking place on 25 September 2026, as part of the Mediterranean Coast Day.

Role of the Volunteers

Support for cultural events:

·         Assisting with the facilitation of artistic workshops, film screenings, concerts, or exhibitions

·         Contributing to the promotion of events (social media, posters, documentation)

Support for the intercultural program:

·         Taking part in the organization of activities that encourage intercultural exchange

·         Leading or co-leading meetings, discussions, language workshops, or creative activities

·         Promoting one’s own culture and discovering Cypriot culture

 ·         Supporting the reception of international young people and their integration into local life

Participation in environmental activities:

·         Taking part in environmental awareness-raising actions

·         Supporting local initiatives: neighborhood clean-ups, nature-based activities, recycling actions

Time Commitment

·         Part-time volunteering (20 hours per week)

·         Flexible schedule, depending on activities and events

·         Increased involvement around key events, especially September 2026

Eligibility & Requirements

·         Be based in Cyprus for the duration of the volunteering activities (April – September 2026)

Υποστήριξη πολιτιστικών εκδηλώσεων

·         Υποστήριξη στην προβολή και τεκμηρίωση εκδηλώσεων (μέσα κοινωνικής δικτύωσης, αφίσες, οπτικό υλικό)

Υποστήριξη διαπολιτισμικού προγράμματος

·         Συμμετοχή στη διοργάνωση δράσεων που ενισχύουν τη διαπολιτισμική ανταλλαγή

·         Συντονισμός ή συν-συντονισμός συζητήσεων, εργαστηρίων γλώσσας ή δημιουργικών δραστηριοτήτων

·         Προώθηση της δικής τους κουλτούρας και γνωριμία με τον κυπριακό πολιτισμό

·         Υποστήριξη της υποδοχής και ένταξης νέων στην τοπική κοινωνία

Συμμετοχή σε περιβαλλοντικές δράσεις

·         Συμμετοχή σε δράσεις ευαισθητοποίησης για το περιβάλλον

·         Υποστήριξη τοπικών πρωτοβουλιών, όπως καθαρισμοί γειτονιών, δράσεις στη φύση και ανακύκλωση
